Heart failure in elderly poodle
 
HI all, was wondering if anyone has experienced this.....

My elderly female poodle, Prissy, has many problems that includes heart failure with cough, allergies to just about everything, terrible skin-her stomach looks like elephant skin from allergies, she is constantly either licking her feet or pulling hair out of her back...I often catch her sitting up straight on the couch scratching her stomach with both front paws.
When her allergies are acting up she puts off a terrible odor.
Oh, she also has a small lump on her throat. All these things the vet is aware of.

Several times over the weekend I have thought I smelled dog poo. Well, its her breath. She has coughed more over the weekend, probably due to weather changes. There are no problems with her teeth...those she has left. She is currently taking encard and lasix. She has taken prednisone off and on for several years but is not on it at present.


Has anyone else dealt with anything like this?

No. I've never dealt with it but it seems as though your baby has gone through a lot. You may be faced with some decisions on her future that won't be easy but may be in her best interest.

It has only been a year since we had to take my sheltie in due to heart failure....I am so in hopes that that decision can be put off for awhile.

How old is the poodle? Is she a standard, miniature or toy?

She is 10 yrs old and a toy

She is fairly young to be having so many problems in my opinion. I am just curious about her vaccination schedule and at what age she was spayed. Did she get vaccines every year, every three years or did you stop after age 5 or 6 or none after she was done with the puppy series? Does she eat any people food?

Have you been to a homeopathic vet for a consultation? Sometimes they can work wonders where the traditional vets are at a complete loss. It might be worth a try to make her more comfortable in her later years.

I think her poor health and fast aging is r/t allergies and all the meds she has been on and off throughout her life. She had a vaccinations as a pup then every year thereafter. She was spayed, I believe, around 2 years of age. I didn't know about homeopathic vets and I am sure there are none here, but will look to see if any are nearby. Unfortunately, we do give her table food at times, she loves them so much-we do give treats, figure with all else, how much can it hurt. She is not allergic to plain baked potatoes, whitefish and rabbit. She will not have any of that, now eating chicken soup but really seems to do best with boiled chicken/rice

My vet, Dr. Stephen Blake has a website and has patients all over the world as he does phone consultations. He is wonderful. His website is www.thepetwhisperer.com. I think he could really help your poodle. Before you call him I would email him a complete health history on the dog as that is the first thing he will ask you starting from birthand going forward, he wants a complete life history.

reneernc: It SOUNDS to me like it could be Renal Failure - A dog will put off a strong oder....be VERY thirsty all the time ...(their breath changes and the smell is similar to "poo")....They will also pant excessivily and seem bloated ?

I'm only saying this from experience with my husbands cocker spaniel Lady....She was the BEST dog ever and poor girl went into renal failure at 14 years old.....She was never in any pain that I could tell ...

Renal Failure can go on for quite a while before it gets to the point that the quality of life is not good....I'm sorry - and this is ONLY my opinion and for you to really get a good answer for this - the vet can tell you more.....

thanks for the information, you may be right...she does seem a bit bloated at times, she is on lasix so you wouldn't think you would see it. She is going back to the vet this week. She doesn't look like she is uncomfortable, she has actually been more playful since we got Lola.
