IVDD - Doggie Cart?
 
Hello all,

Today marks 6 weeks since my Cocker Mix Maddie had surgery for IVDD. The specialist stated that the progress made so far may be the best she will get. I'm so happy she can use her back legs, but she is very drunk-walking, stumbles and falls often. She cannot walk on any slick surface, only grass or carpet. My question is - would you consider getting a doggie wheelchair for a dog that can still use their back legs, but struggles? I'm just thinking as far as being able to do things like go on walks, and just be able to function as normal as possible. I'm really holding onto the hope that she will improve, but the surgeon was not as hopeful as I was, and kept saying that her progress now may be the best as shes going to get. I hate having to confine her to the living room, and I would like for her to be able to have as normal as possible life. She was an incredibly active dog before her surgery and I'm just trying to make her happy as possible with her "new normal". Thank you all!

Poor Maddie. I wouldn't be opposed to using a cart, but this would be a great question for the specialist first. I'm wondering if the cart would hinder potential progress and improvement that might be gained through regular walking (short walks to start, in grass where she can keep her footing better). 6 weeks is not a very long time. I know with humans that surgery like this can require much longer to show more improvement.

You could also add in stroller rides for the time being. Being outdoors, the sights, sounds, and smells are all stimulating for a dog. Whenever Max has been on restricted activity for various reasons, he has enjoyed stroller rides.

I think a stroller will be a great idea. My step mom also has agreed to let us "borrow" her pool for Maddie to exercise her legs, I think that will be great as well. The more I think about it, I agree - a cart would hinder her progress. She actually has made really good improvements since my last post. I can let her freely walk outside in the grass which has made her so happy. I think a stroller is in our future, so we can go on walks and she can enjoy the things she previously did before her injury.

I am very happy to hear that Maddie is continuing to improve and is enjoying more outdoor time. Wishing her continued progress. I can imagine how happy you are to see her happy.

Swimming is an excellent source of exercise for a pup with this condition, strengthens muscles. There is always hope, never give up.
