A Lovely Video of great obedience work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa87...P6MVF2k7rbKKVV The breed is black Russian Terrier. As everything is in Russian I can't tell you what it says - but it looks like each skill is marked out of 10. The obedience work skills look a little different to the Canadian and American Obedience testing - but still comparable. On recalls and retrieves we have the dog return to Front then heel around to left side. It looks like this is somewhere in between our CDX and Utility Dog level of competition. For those not in the know - Obedience Trials have increasing levels of difficulty. The very very first mini level is Canine Good Neighbour or Good Citizen - title changes between USA and Canada. The first official Obedience Title is CD or Companion Dog - then CDX or Companion Dog Excellent - then Utility Dog - then OTCH - Obedience Trial Champion. You are scored out of 200 points. Once past CD level all skills are shown off lead. You get points deductions for a number of things - slow responses - improper heel position (lagging, leading, too far away from handler), failure to perform skill - ie did not retrieve or return - inattention of dog to handler - poor sits - repeat commands - handler errors - The examiners use cards instead of silent hand signals to communicate with the exhibitor. Here once you go to CDX you can use Either Hand Signals or Voice commands not both - at CD level you can use both but they must be used together otherwise it will count as a double command. In our society with our leash laws it is very difficult I find to practice outside off lead as our dogs are supposed to be on lead all the time. . . .. I have to sneak around to do the off lead work. Find a slow time of day, an isolated spot and do the work. The true test of a dog off lead obedience is to do it anywhere, boats, city streets, water, etc etc. |
This amazes me! Wow. SO well trained. The, um, opposite of my dogs :D :p. |
WEll I can certainly tell you my Yorkie could not do all of that! Magic yes lol. But what I loved was the sheer pleasure the team had in working together! They were each so happy and that dog had great focus on his handler. |

Actually yes I think so. Remember the Yorkie breed and the BRT breed were bred for very different purposes. Blackies since their inception to guard and protect humans - and that skill was chosen for in all the progenitors of this breed. Yorkies origin and purpose has a few different viewpoints, but if they in history were bred for ratting, that is not a purpose with a very close human interaction. Today very very few breeders are breeding Yorkies for their working ability, and over time that does get watered down or even lost. Our Blackies for the most part of their young history are still being bred for their working ability. Oh and just a footnote on the BRT history - they were bred for a working guard and military dog. They failed at it! And finally the REd Star Kennel allowed public breeders to breed these dogs. They failed because they were handler focussed and worked best for that human they chose - not so much with any other soldier or guard. Apparently this trait could not be bred out of them. They are this way today. They will select one member of the family to bond with the closest tie, the others are fine as far as the Blackie is concerned, but one person is their hearts chosen. I think our Yorkies just need more time and focus to train. Afterall look what more than a few members of our forum have done. YorkieTalkJilly, LovestoDream, Salazark to name just a few. I apologize if I have skipped some folks (and I know I have),, but these three are in my recent memory. What I have noticed with my Razzle is that it took him a lot lot longer to develop focus, and focus on the human is key for training. Now this could be just him, IDK. Some of it could be the wee factor and the cuteness factor. YTès have both in spades! So owners are not as rigorous as say an owner of a BRT would be. Anyhoo just my non scientific based thoughts on this :-) |

Thanks Lisa - we trained a bit inside together today and last night. On the stand and hold - difficult for a service dog to do - but that is my focus with her. She is getting a wee bit better at that - but still thinks of it as a game. Magic at her age - was all serious about it - well he was borne a serious boy! She is a debutante. Much different personality - yet going towards serious in her own female way. She was easily distracted and had boredom with only a few minutes of heel in the house. And she is still using her mouth!!! She got disciplined for this very severely. For her that means BAD GIRL> NO MOUTH. And I walk out of the room and ignore her. I have to personally get her out and about much more. I love hubby, but he has not been trained in competitive obedience, and is rather too permissive for me. Dara has linked herself with him, which is great, finally one of our Blackies have. But she still sees me as the Alpha top dog, which I am in this household. And then we have her footshy thing, I am working with her on this. |
What a performance. What a team. Loved seeing those two work together. Thanks for the smiles. |
