Big Boys Lovers? I mean Huge dog lovers anyone? Danes, Dogos, Mastiffs, Rotties? I am having such a joyfull time with our Yorky boy that sparks my curiosity how much would I enjoy a bigger dog I could tangle with?:p Comments? pics welcome! |
You may really enjoy a big dog, but not all big dogs enjoy Yorkies....... and IMO it probably isn't a good idea to leave them together unattended. I am sure there are some gentle giants, but I personally wouldn't take any chances regardless..... a big dog could be just "playing" but it could be fatal with a little Yorkie. |
I really would like to own a big dog one day, but I just don't want to risk it around my little guys. One day I would like to own an Irish Wolfhound & a very close friend of mine who I'll be living with for a very long while... wants to own a Great Dane which I think are beautiful dogs. Airedale terrier's aren't as big as those guys, but I would like to own one of those one day, too. |
Mastiffs are very gentle dogs. I would worry about it getting stepped or hurt accidently more than because of aggression. We have 2 big dogs outside and they don't bother our yorkies at all! |

I loooveee Mastiffs. I hope to own an English Mastiff or a Dogue de Bordadeux one day ('Hooch' dog). But it'll be a lonnggg way in the future, if ever. I would own an english mastiff with a little dog over a Lab, to be honest. Labs can be very over-exuberant as puppies, and way overly-friendly. Jackson hates their play style. I find most Mastiffs to be gentle giants. There was a Dogue pup at the dog park one day that was even very aware of her size, and didn't bother Jackson at all. |
4 Attachment(s) I love big dogs.. I have an Airedale Terrier named Angus , he's 85 lbs.. Oscar adores his big brother. There are precautions you need to take when having a big dog/tiny dog home. Although Angus and the little ones get along great i do not leave them together unsupervised. The little ones could easily get injured just from being stepped on or from rough play.. :) |
I don't have a huge big dog...Nika is a 65lb husky who is the gentlest sweetest dog. She has never intentionally hurt anything in the 11 years I have owned her. I felt quite safe getting a yorkie with her. Again, with Lola, she never rough housed with her. One day though Lola had a piece of cheese she was resource guarding- she never had done that before to the extent she was doing it. Nika was on my bed. Lola was on the floor being a crabby butt at the cats and if Nika even looked at her. I was getting off the bed to get the cheese and Nika jumped down, just to get off the bed. Lola lunged at her as she was jumping down and they hit just right, breaking Lola's neck. It was such a freak accident. I bring this up because when we talk about owning big dogs with yorkies it seems we talk a lot about the energy level, aggressive level etc of the big one! We have to remember too that the yorkie has a feistiness and attitude at times. I do things differently with Ruby and Rosie even though Lola's death was not Nika's fault. Treats are handed to each dog instead of dropped on the ground. If its a chew type treat I keep the little dogs separate from the big dog until they are done chewing. Then the treats get picked up and put away. I still supervise like crazy. They are never alone etc |
My husband has always wanted a big dog. If I ever got a big dog, it would be a Great Dane because I hear they are just oversized lap dogs lol. We have a "bigger" dog (70 lbs) now. There is another member on the forum that has an Akita. He is gorgeous. |
Teri- I volunteer by transporting for various rescues up here and one of the volunteers also raised Great Danes. She usually has one with her when we meet to exchange dogs...gosh I love them!!!!! |
Bobbi - I used to work with a lady that would ride around with her 2 GD's in her car everywhere she went. She had a Chevy Chevette - remember those? lol |

It was sometimes hard to tell who was driving. Just sayin... LOL |
My cousin has an English mastiff & a boxer. I have a boxer & now my little yorkie. The English mastiff is very large and she's very laid back, not playful at all. Boxers have lots of energy & they're great dogs who are highly intelligent. My boxer understands most of what I'm saying to her.. From all my experience & reading, boxers take to any & all animals. Also they are beyond friendly dogs who would put up with almost anything, including children hanging all over them, etc lol. I can't say enough about boxers. She also adores my little yorkie Bella as well.. Besides yorkies, they are my absolute favorite dog breed! Hope I've helped :-) |
Thank you all for your answers. I keep looking a bigger dogs and feel i coud benefit more having a bigger dog. IDK. Time will tell. |
