Sammy had a bad week Remy's big brother, a 8 year old Lhasa apso has had a bad week. We were visiting dh's sister and while walking Sammy went up to a fence to say "hi" to the dog behind the fence. Well the dog managed to get enough of his face through the fence and bite sammy's ear. Poor sammy started screaming.. yelping.. I ran up and picked up sammy. It was such a bad accident, I was walking three dogs and Sammy pulled the leash out of my hand. It was blood, but I really did not see the bite till the next day. I though he scarped Sammy's face.. he is so harry I could did not see the bite. The next day I noticed the hair around his ear was stiff. Also, I noticed one of Sammy's eyes looked "off".... like he may have an infection. So to the vet we go... 1.) Sammy has a ulcer on his eye. Small.. but there. 2.) Sammy had three puncher wounds on his ear flap. 3.) Sammy had an ear infection. We have a week of several meds and his eye will must be checked again in 5 days. I feel so bad about the dog bite... I feel it is my fault because I dropped the leash. I am glad it wasn't Remy... the dog would have killed her! I am glad I noticed the eye.. hopefully caught it early. Now.. the dam ear infections.. I clean his ears, I pull the hair out. I don't understand why he keeps getting ear infections!! ok... I vented.. feel a little better:) |
OMgosh...that horrible mean dog. Poor Sammy hope he gets to feeling much better. The meds should do it. What an awful experience for you both. I know it must have scared you silly. So glad you caught it and I'm sure your quick response in getting him to the vet will make the world of difference in a speedy recovery. Yes, thank the good Lord it wasn't Remy...the bites could have been fatal. I know it's hard, but try not to beat yourself up...it was an accident and you are a wonderful mommy! Your babies can always count on you! |
Oh, and I'm not help with the ear infection, but I have heard some breeds are more prone than others, especially the ones with floppy ears. |
Oh no! Poor Sammy!! Sending hugs and prayers! |
I'm just seeing this now. Poor Sammy! Sending prayers for a speedy and full recovery. If you have a cone/collar, it might be a good idea for Sammy to wear it at least for a couple of days to prevent him from pawing at his injured eye, especially in his sleep. As long as you are faithful with the medicine, his eye should be fine. |
Poor Sammy. Somebody doesn't know how to be a good neighbor! It's so good you saw the eye and got him to the vet. Sending prayers and hugs to Sammy and his mommy. |
I'm so sorry that happened. It isn't your fault. It was just an accident. I hope Sammy will be fine very soon. He was just being friendly. I don't understand why people have mean dogs like that. |
Poor Sammy!! I bet that scared you to death. Hope Sammy heals fast. Get well soon Sammy!! |
Thanks guys.. Poor Sammy is so saggy today. I can tell the ear is bothering him.. Thanks Maximo.. I hope his eye heals fast. I remember reading somewhere that dogs like lhasas and shih tuz often have eye problems. The vet said he may have "dry eye" and I am guessing that will mean eye drops. Looking back I can remember eye gunk off and on in that eye. I think it intensified after the last time he was groomed. I am now wondering if something happen when he was groomed ? I just don't want him to lose that eye!!! I will keep you guys posted when I take him back for his check up Shinja |
He won't lose his eye with your good care. I'm sure it's heartbreaking to see him in such a state. |

Try talking to your groomer and asking what products are used on Sammy's head. I have a thread in the grooming section from last week asking everyone for advice on products and techniques for safely washing the head. Several people recommended Spa facial scrub as gentle on the eyes. I used it on both Teddy and Max and it was great. Cleaned without irritating. Keep us updated on your baby. :) |
Poor Sammy and Mom. I hope he heals quickly. |
Shinja, I'm so sorry for both you and Sammy! Sending healing thoughts to BOTH of you! |

I will do some research on the dry eye. He does not have the bluding eyes like my shih tuz so I am hoping that will help. |

Thanks guys... I did some research and now I see that I overlooked several indicators of dry eye!! The discharge, the fact that 2 years ago he had surgery for cherry eye (the third eye lid removed) and he was shaking his head.. I though it was due to the ear infection I was treating. oh my Anyway.. he is doing better. He has not bit me giving meds yet:eek: just kidding I do think he thinks about it though. His eye looks a lot better, the dog bite on his ear still looks sore. I take him back to the vet Thursday. The vet has called twice to check up on him, and he thinks he is doing well. He wants to check the ulcer to be sure it has or is healing. Of course he may be on eye drops for the rest of his life. See, this is a lesson I have learned. I just knew I needed to have him checked, glad I listened to my inter voice. and not dh!! Will keep you posted on Thursday. |
Glad to hear Sammy is better. :) And why would you ever listen to DH?! ;) |
Shinja, Just seeing this, so sorry You and Sammy had to go through this. Sending hugs and saying prayers that he continues to heal. |

lol... I know.. I let him think I listen because he is "the man". The funny part I overheard him tell his sister about Sammy illnesses.. and he made it sound like HE took Sammy to the vet:eek: I think the eye infection scared dh too. He loves his furbuts as much as I do -- |
Bless his heart. I hope he is well on the road to recovery now! And don't blame yourself! we all have dropped leashes. I dropped Gracie's once in PetSmart and didn't even notice. A nice woman walked up to me and asked me if she was mine. She said since I had two other yorkies in tow she thought it problably was. Yikes! |
Sammy's check up Sammy had his check up today. The vet said his eye looks great, he said he may have been irritated from the groomers. He said some products or blowing hair into his eyes could have caused the ulcer, that would be better than having dry eye But.. his ear from the dog bite is not healing very well. In fact, he lost a little wedge of his ear flap. The vet said if it doesn't heal he may have to remove the tip of his ear flap..that would be better than infection and him tearing it by accident. I have to take him back in a week to see how it is healing. |
Very happy to hear that Sammy's eye has healed! I wish his ear would heal too, poor baby, but if not, his mommy and vet are on top of it. :) Glad to hear Sammy is doing so well. |
Poor little Sammy. I would be tempted to get the other ear clipped too so they match if it comes to that. (Not!) He will recover, I am sure because he has yorkietalk prayers on his side and yorkietalk prayers are the best! Keeping both of you in my heart. |
Just seeing this thread today... OMGosh! Sure praying that Sammy heals fast and feels better soon! |
update on Sammy 1 Attachment(s) Thanks guys for all you heartfelt prayers and caring. I know it makes a difference, and we all have so much on our plates it means a lot to me for you all to take the time to care. I think my prayer list has more YT members on it than others!! That is a good thing! Sammy is feeling better, his eye sure looks better. I take him back in a few days.. the vet is hoping it is not dry eye. His ear, I guess a lot worst could happen. I hope it heals and when his hair grows back it will be protected. I posted a picture of my grumpy baby! He is a mommy's boy for sure, never far from me when I am home. |
Awwwww. Sammy is such a cutie! :) Glad is eye is better. Praying ear will heal quickly! |
