Any food recommendations for my lab/springer?
 
I started feeding my lab/springer mix dog who is 6 years old Nutro but now I am hearing in general that is not such a good food. He acts like he is starving when I feed him so I don't think he is getting enough to make him feel full yet we need to watch his weight because he is right where he should be.

He is about 65 lbs. I have thought about feeding him Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, or maybe Natural balance.

My Yorkie is on Fromm but I don't know if that is good for older dogs too?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am thinking that may be a good one too...the owner of Lea's has a lab/collie mix so I think I will ask her what she feeds her dog (which looks A LOT like my Tubby) and go from there.

Anything but Nutro even if that means Purina Dog Chow.

I had asked my old vet (before we moved) to recommend a dog food as I was feeding Iams and I knew that was not as good as I thought it was and she recommended Nutro...then to my surprise I found out that is probably even worse so back to the drawing board.
I knew Nutro was bad because he acts like he is starving when I feed him and he didn't use to act that way.... :(

I have hard a lot of good things about Blue Buffalo and the way they process the food and I also know Natural Balance is good so I just have to make the decision soon before the nasty stuff is gone so I can slowly introduce the new food.
Tubby has always been soon healthy~I am so mad that I started feeding both Tubby and Lucy Nutro...ugh!

I don't have a Petsmart near me anymore :( I will check with Lea's Pet Products because she says she will order anything they don't have!

I think Castor & Pollux is a great food. I also like Natural Balance. Though I have never fed either (except samplings of NB).

We are extremely happy right now with Taste of the Wild. It's also pretty inexpensive for the quality, IMO. If I had a larger breed, I would probably feed any one of those three foods, because of the good quality and the cost.

I like Castor & Pollux and Taste of the Wild too. When a dog is coming of off something like Nutro, I think I would choose something that isn't such a radical change in protein/fat/carbs and general richness. That is why I voted for Natural Balance. Max started on Nutro, then we went to Natural Balance for over a year. This is just my personal opinion. Ann, whatever you choose, buy a small 5 pound bag first to test that it works for your lab/springer.

I priced all of them and Natural Balance is quite expensive, Taste of the Wild seems a little more reasonable for the quality. I got samples of T of the W but they didn't have any samples of NB.

Canine royal is garbage. I have always feed pro plan to my dogs they have always done well on it. I know wellness, holistic, blue buffalo, and taste of the wild are highly recommended by dog food review sites.

Yes, I think I may go with Taste of the Wild as it looks like it's more reasonable in price and good quality!

So I got a couple of samples of TOTW and I put a small amount mixed with his other food last night and this morning and PEEEWWWWW...he has been letting out some silent but deadly farts and Wooowweeee do they stink!!

What do you think this means??? I am hoping it will pass once I keep giving him a little but if not I don't think our house will be able to stand the stench! :eek:

I started feeding him Fromm so that both of my dogs can be on the same food....well we have the same issue again he has HORRENDOUS GAS....it is really bad.
I may try Blue Buffalo next...is it bad to switch again? The woman who owns the pet supply store where I go says she switches her dogs food every couple of months and they are bigger dogs like Tubby...so I may try to change again when this bag gets low.
