Oh gosh...just seeing this. I am so glad that everything went ok for Cassie. I am so sorry, Lou, that you are going through this. Cassie is so lucky to be loved by you!

You might not want to look at the photos if you are squeamish, but she didn’t look so awfully bad to me. The swelling is minimal and she should heal just fine. The stitches are the kind that dissolve.

Cassie is home and things are going pretty well. I had to carry her around for a while after we arrived because the little ones were so happy to see her they were swarming. Cassie is so sweet on them she would have let them mall her even if it hurt. But she was so doped up on the pain killers that she wasn’t protecting that eye and I didn’t want anything to happen.

So far Cassie is leaving everything alone. She isn’t rubbing or scratching but when I put the eye ointment on the eye this morning she promptly wiped it off with her paw.

Cassie found her way to the water bowl almost immediately but managed to bump into both the doorway and garbage can on her way. She walks slowly so no damage. She will have to get used to having a blind side. I guess she was seeing shadows out of that eye after all. Later on she made it back several times. She also found the rug by the kitchen door to pee on. Grrr. We have struggled with her on that one for a while now.

Eating, again as expected, was a struggle. I gave her some cooked chicken by hand and managed to get a few bites down her and dh got her to eat a Triscuit – her favorite treat. She was tempted by some dry cat food too. (Why do dogs love that stuff so much?) She has to take antibiotics and pain pills but that was no trouble. She loves that cheese in a can and doesn’t bother to chew when I hide pills in it. She was even eager for it. There would be no eating problem at all with her if I limited her to that stuff.

This morning she was trying to follow me around as I got ready for work. This was a total display of insecurity. I wish I could have stayed home with her but I am booked all day with meetings and training and HAVE to be there. I did decide that I would have to be late for work so I could just sit and cuddle my baby for a while. We cuddled until I was sure the morning pain pill took effect and she could go back to sleep. Dh had BETTER take good care of her today.

The kitten is doing something strange – she is constantly sniffing Cassie’s butt. I mean up close and personal. What the heck is that all about?

Me again.....I just wanted to add that I am grateful for all of you caring so much about my little girl. It means so much to me to have friends that truly understand what I am feeling as well as what Cassie is going through. This is a special place full of special people.

Glad to hear Cassie is home and is eating a little. She sounds very happy to be home too! You're right, her incision site does look really good.

What is it w rugs by a back door? My little Gidget will sometimes go on that "wipe your foot mat" by the back door instead of her piddle pad in the laundry room. I don't get it.

Will keep Cassie and mom in our prayers! :)

I am so glad that Cassie is doing well and on her way to being pain free.

BTW~she looks great in her pictures. With a little time and hair she will be back to her gorgeous self. :)

Oh, Lou, she is precious! :) She will adapt quickly! They all do. One of my personal pups had an eye deformity from birth and she does fantastic. I have a foster and a personal pup who are both blind. They get around just like the others. I am careful not to do any major moving of items in my home because they use them as markers.

I think Cassie's eye looks really good - it looks like it's healing nicely. :thumbup: She is so pretty and precious, it's easy to see why she's so special to you. I love hearing you talk about her being mama to all the others and taking care of everyone!

Does she not have to wear an e-collar to protect that area for a while? I'm so happy for you both that she's getting around on her own and has been eating a little. She'll be settled in in no time. :)

Awww, she is adorable and she'll be like new in no time. She really should be wearing an E collar though & it needs to be a hard one as the soft will fold up if she runs into something. When Gracie had her eye removed I kept her in a Graco baby bed while she was healing as it has soft sides so she did not have to wear the cone all day & nite, only when she needed some play time & for potty breaks did she have to wear the cone.

The vet told me originally that she would come home with her right paw wrapped because she has dew claws. But when I picked her up Dr Jo said she wasn't messing with it at all and she felt it would be safe to send her home like that. She added that if we had any problems to let her know and we could come and get an e-collar. Well, just like every other member on this board (probably) I have a few of those. Dh has strict orders to put one on her if she starts messing with the eye. He does little else besides sit in the recliner these days so he is able to watch her every move.

I just called to check on her and she is still doing well. She hasn't tried to mess with it at all. She is drinking water but not eating the dry food we keep down for them. Sigh. I still have some chicken.

Aww, what a good Daddy she has too. Even though she has some surgery pain , I bet it's nothing compared to the extreme pain & pressure the eye was causing her. My vet insisted she wear the collar , not because he was afraid she would paw at it but because they are not used to the eye being gone even when they were blind before surgery as they are still a bit confused & will run into things & the surgery site is going to most of the time be the 1st thing to hit what ever they run into. OUCH ! So whenever Gracie was not in her bed, she had the collar on.
However my Gracie was a little hyper spazzzzzz & I didn't want to take any chances that she would hit it.

I am so sorry for all that you and Cassie are going through, Lou :(. My heart is with you both, and I know how much you love her.

Can I ask you a question...did you already say why the eye needed to removed? In other words, was the eye getting inflamed from the cataract and too painful (and unable to heal, obviously)? I was hoping to know this bc Wylie has one cataract, and I know his Ophthalmologist said how vulnerable cataracts are to inflammation...and we have to give eyedrops every other day to prevent inflammation. His cataract is now at 90% :(. I can't recall what his Ophth said about if the eye should eventually be removed...or, when?

I think Wylie will be fine and I\'m so sorry to hear that he has cataracts. Cassie developed glaucoma in her right eye and it was a while before we realized we had a problem It progressed quickly and the meds the dr gave us didn\'t help for very long. Pressure behind the eye was the problem, not inflammation. The pressure caused blood vessels to burst behind the eye and the pressure was just too painful to even think about. Both eyes had cataracts but I don\'t think they are a prelude to glaucoma but I will certainly as the vet when we go in to see her again. My biggest hope is that Cassie doesn\'t develope it in her left eye too. I just hate putting one of my little ones through surgery.
