Another case of Parvo
 

Milli got a new little brother last weekend....a 4 month old corgi that we named Cooper. Six days after we brought him home, on Friday, he was diagnosed with parvo. :cry: We rushed him to the emergency animal hospital for intensive care. This is the same hospital that Skye was at when she had parvo over Easter weekend. That's two cases of parvo in one year. Milli is the only one that was able to escape the virus and stay healthy.

*sigh* We went to visit Cooper today and he's still not doing well. So sad!:unlove:

Sorry to hear that -- Parvo is serious, as you must already know if you just nursed another through it over Easter. Parvo virus can live for many months outside of a host -- it can be in their beds, toys, food containers, even the ground outside! Washing everything down inside your house with bleach water can help. I would get rid of most of the toys unless you can clean then well with bleach water, same with beds. I have even read where they recommended using a diluted bleach water on your yard! Might kill the grass though.

Best is just not to bring a dog home unless it is fully immunized against PARVO. It usually takes 7 - 10 days from exposure to symptoms so your little Corgi was probably exposed to it before you brought him home but.... the timing is questionable as symptoms could have shown a little early and it could be from exposure at your home. Possible.

Adult dogs can actually be carriers and show no symptoms at all although they are the ones spreading it to younger ones whose immunity is not full yet. Hopefully Milli is just well vacinated and not a carrier.

Wish your little Corgi the best! They can work miracles. Years ago we got a dog from the pound that came down with Parvo in the first few days even tho he had been given a vaccine. It cost us a bundle but we saved him, thanks to some transfusions from a boxer. We used to laugh and tell people he was part boxer. Looked nothing like one but he had that blood. :)

Our vet told us that the parvo virus can live in the soil for 10 years or more. I'm beginning to get concerned that maybe the virus was in the soil here before we bought the house. Maybe the previous owner didn't know....or maybe he didn't disclose it. Either way, with 2 out of 3 puppies having contracted the disease, we'll certainly disclose it if anyone ever buys our house. I can't even imagine putting someone else through the worries we've endured over the past year.

We try to keep things meticulously clean inside the house...bleaching their toys and crates and stuff....but, if it's in the soil? We thought that since Milli didn't get the disease (her puppy series wasn't completely done when we brought her home) that we'd kept things clean enough and might not need to worry about the virus so much. Sadly enough, we were wrong. And sweet little Cooper is the one suffering for our mistakes. Breaks my heart.

Oh no! Please, do, keep up posted. Parvo is such an awful disease.

Bleach the Yard
 

You can also bleach your yards. Just use one of those fertilizer sprayers that goes on the end of your garden hose. It will not hurt your lawn or plants but keep the dogs off of it till it drys. I'll be praying for your baby.

I have also heard you can put Lime down to kill Parvo.

What are signs of Parvo? If vacinated for it can they still get it?
