Anyone know anything about pugs? My mom has two but all she will say is that they are great and they are just big balls of love. I know that her two are but not all dogs are the same. I wanted to know if anyone knew the breed intimately I know that they shed every single day and that they can have very bad breathing problems even if bred well. I know that they require a lot of attention to the wrinkles around the face and tail and if not kept active they can become overweight witch can cause problems with there knees hearts and lungs. I also know that pugs wear bred to sit and look pretty so they are not always active witch could pose a small problem when put in a home with a terrier (like a yorkie) I guess im looking for the fine print on the breed. |
I showed a few pugs over 15 years ago. I would only buy from a knowledgable breeder/exhibitor. One that has been "in the breed" for many years. I love the breed! They are very active and comical! they love to play and are good with Yorkies. They do have some of the same health problems as Yorkies, like loose patellas. My biggest health concern is PUG DOG ENCEPHALITIS! It is a heartbreaker and is fatal. Back when I had mine, there was no test to tell if your dog had this nasty condition. It can show up in any line. I do not know if there is a test for it now. There possibly could be and I hope that there is. |
Encephalitis? Well that could explain a lot about me! |

Pugs have really bad skin issues too, 90% of the ones I see have some yeasty skin thing going on. THey sure are cute when thier puppies though, get a good breeder and I think you'll be ok. Also encephalitis is more common in tiny apple-head shaped ones so maybe stay away from those. |
Pugs are cute, loving and are really playful...And who can resist that curly tail!? We had one(Festus) many years ago. The only issue he had was that he had fungus in the folds of his face and he STUNK to high heaven! He loved to snuggle up to you and put his head on your shoulder but the smell almost knocked us out! My husband lovingly refered to him as "puss head"! He died at the ripe old age of 12. After he was gone we decided to go with a less smelly breed! We loved him though! |
