Anyone have a Boston Terrier? Just wondering what kind of personality do they have? Any negatives for the breed? Any info would help... Thanks in advance :) |
I don't personally have one, but my in-laws do. He's almost the most hyper dog I've ever seen...second to a jack russell terrier. He does shed and it's more noticeable to me than their other dog (a french bull dog) because of the white hairs. And I hope you don't mind doggy slobber, cause they have plenty. He's also incredibly strong for a mid-sized dog. He can easily knock you over and playing tug-of-war with him is just asking for a pulled muscle. He loves to go swimming in their pool and at the lake. He's definitely got personality! And can be pretty funny, but he's also very loud and takes awhile to calm down after we show up at the house. He is sometimes kind of aggressive. Not really in a mean way, but he gets wrapped up in playing and forgets it is play so he can get pretty rough. My husband's uncle tends to enjoy pestering the dog at holidays, and the dog has snapped at him before. Granted, the uncle more than deserved it. I think like with most other breeds, the negatives can be gotten rid of by good training. Training is not something my in-laws know much about... -C |
Our first dog was a Boston. He was FABULOUS - especially with kids. They're so smart, entertaining and loyal. If well bred - an excellant breed. I don't remember ours being hyper - he just loved to play - but then so did my blk Lab. Very easy to train - even in potty training. Anyway, I only have good things to say about them. |
I have had three Bostons (all came for a breeder who shows them) and one had a litter of 5. I had her bred to a little CH in simi valley. They are wonderful little dogs. They will play and play and play as long as you want, but are just as happy vegging out with you whenever you want. I've never had one to slobber, or be so strong they can pull you down, but I've seen really large ones that are not of good breeding that are like that. They are wonderful with kids of all ages, smart as they come, easily trained, no doggie odors and super easy to take care of. The one thing you have to be aware of is they pass gas.......and can clear a room sometimes. :eek: They love to sleep with you and go right under the covers. They need sweaters and jackets when the weather is cold. They only shed a minimal amount if they are getting the proper diet and Omega fatty acids. I highly recommend finding someone who shows these dogs and see if you can get some information from them and maybe even see their dogs and puppies before you ever buy one. Go to a dog show if you find one showing Bostons, and talk with the owners there. I very highly recommend this wonderful breed!! |
Thanks for the help :) I'm just looking right now... If I did get one...I wanted to rescue one or possibly find an older one...not sure I want to deal with the puppy stage again... anyone know a breeder with a retired show dog? |

my son has one, a female, and he has 4 kids ages 13 to 2. Sadie is a great dog. Follows the kids everywhere and will jump in anyones car to go for a ride. Great family dogs |

Gez, I'm not sure how old they get but ours lived over 10 yrs and he didn't die from an illness - it was an accident. I really don't recall any health issues either. I mean they may have them but ours didn't - we did get him from a good breeder. It's been a LONG time ago so I'm sure my memory isn't the best. My dad loved the breed so much that he had several after that until he passed away. I do know that his Pug had alot of issues but I don't remember any with the Boston. |

Ryan I have never owned one, but I pet sit 2 of them. They are awesome. They love to play catch and listen very well. :) |

I really have loved every Boston I've ever met (dog parks, pet stores, etc). They just seem sooo friendly. Definitely strong for little guys, and muscular, and agile. I love it! I have looked into the breed a bit and there's a few forums like YT for them (One is called Woof! I think?) and I'm sure you could find out some more info there. :) I research different breeds sometimes because I think it's gonna be a little bit before adding a 2nd dog so I really wanna be sure. :) BTW, Zipper is adorable. |
My husband lost his dearly beloved Boston last summer due to an accident, age 13. Smartest animal that ever lived. Our Mumpsy didn't shed. All the days of her life....she learned a new trick every other month. So amazingly smart and easily trained. Potty training took literally one day. We were unashamedly the biggest "show-offs" in every class we took her to. Agility, obedience, fly ball. The last trick we taught her was, we'd say "Mumpsy, if your weight is good, you can have a treat". Then she would run to the scale and hop on with one back foot still on the floor (pretending to cheat). My husband still grieves everytime he sees a Boston. |
