Anyone have a great dane? I have been doing some research on great danes and surprisingly enough they are supposed to be wonderful with small dogs and babies. We have two little dogs - a yorkie and a yorkie/chi mix - and we ahve been talking about getting a third but can't decide what to get. If anyone has a great dane, I would love you hear about your experience. Thanks. I also want a Biewer and King Charles Cavalier - I wish I had room for a 100!!! :) |
we used to raise them. They're wonderful, gentle souls. The only really bad thing is their life expectancy is usually 7 to 9 years........ |

My daughter has a rescued dane and black lab, he is HUGE, he and Laci have played tug a war, he is very gentle but clumsy, I worry because of his 125 pd body, one step in the wrong spot and and she could be very hurt, it would NOT ever be intended.. He loves her.. but he gallops around and he really could hurt her! My friend just recently lost her GD his name was Golliath... he was only 8 its sad they live such a short life! |

I think they are soooo cool. I've only met a few in real life. If I had the room and a bigger house and a bigger car (LOL) and more money for food... I'd love to own one. I always hear they are gentle giants. I know you have to be more careful their 1st year of life with not over-exercising because their bones are growing and they get sooo big so they have to be on somewhat limited activity for the 1st year. I THINK they also get bloat and hip dyplasia alot. The Irish Wolfhounds are really cool, too. They're even bigger than Danes and very gentle and sweet (I've met a few). |
I would just like to share my experiences with you and maybe it could help you in your decision. I can tell you that large dogs can do serious damage to the little ones while at play. You can compare it to a head on collision with a cement wall going about 75 mpg. I saw WAY too many of these collisions when I worked for a vet. I will not go into the gory details but I will say it was not pretty and many did not survive. |

As many of you know, I just went through rescuing the *most* gentle Pitbull on the planet, Ambrey (okay, I'm biased :p) - she thought she was a lap dog! Seriously, a total love bug, and that's all she was capable of, really. However, we kept the boys separate from her the *entire* time we fostered her...only bc all she would have to do while playing, is bring down a friendly, playful paw and *boom*, Marcel's neck could be broken in a 1/2 second. That would not have been Ambrey's fault...rather, just a size/power difference. Something to consider....:) |

A lady in my neighborhood owns two Great Danes. When she is out with one of them, we wave and keep going. Jackson, the Harlequin, does not like small dogs at all. He practically pulls the owner down the street. Dakota, the Brindle, is very gentle. She loves small dogs but we are very careful when she meets the Yorkies, I keep mine back enough so that they don't get stepped on. That would be a tragedy. But the Brindle is very gentle and sweet. |
Great Danes are sweet loving dogs but mixing them in to a family with little yorkies scares me. I must share this very sad story with you and I apologize for being gloom and doom. My girl friend has a great dane, lab and a bichon and they all get along wonderful. One day the great dane was reacting to the sound of the door bell- jogging down the hall and the bichon ran in front of him. The little guy suffered a severe back injury and is unable to use his back legs today. It is so sad to see this little sweet guy, he breaks my heart : ( This was a freak accident and I'm sure there are many familys with various size dogs that have a happy tails to tell. As small breed owners we tend to plan ahead and seek to have a safe environment for our littleones so I think it's great you are seeking advice. Good luck making your decision.~wendy |
I don't have a Great Dane, but I do have a Great Pyrenees. I agree with the others that accidents can and do happen. So you have to treat them different than the little ones. Garrett (GP) doesn't get to run in the house and I'm always keeping a watchful eye on were the little ones are and where he is. On the other side of that I also think the little ones need to watch out for his big feet too so I make them all wait before going out and only let them go when I say their name. So Garrett goes out then the little ones go. It works for us. Yes they run in the yard together, but the little ones stay out from under his feet and Garrett is very careful where he steps. He really lets them get away with murder like a good big brother LOL Good luck and post pictures of which ever you decide Please :D |
