Yorkies and other dogs? Hello. As some of you may know, my dog was killed last year. :( Rest in peace darling Terry. Well I decided I want to get another yorkie, and I was wondering how they are with other breed dog? I'm planning to wait at least a year before getting my yorkie, so I wanted to start researching now. I made the mistake of not knowing enough about yorkies and it cost my babies live. :( I do not intend for that to ever happen again. Anyway, my first question is do yorkies socialize well with other breeds? I volunteer at an breed specific shelter and I'm planning to adopt a Shar Pei as well as yorkie. Anyone with different breed dog have any advice for me? Thank you in advance :) :animal-pa |
It totally depends on how socialized the dog was when he was a pup. Also, I think socialization at the breeder has something to do with it. Scruffs was never taken on walks (before I got him, he didn't even have a leash) but he is still friendly to other dogs, just sometimes he get intimidated if there are too many dogs. If you get a Shar Pei, just make sure to take it to meet the Yorkie before you decide to keep the Yorkie. I've met unsocialized Yorkies who just bark at everything and Yorkies that want to play and run with all the dogs even if they are only 2 lbs! |

I really think its all about how you raise them. Best of luck to you. I'm sorry to hear your other dog died.:( |
The Shar Pei will be older and well trained, and s/he will come with me to visit yorkies till I find my hairy soulmate :) May I ask how you helped Scruffs adjust? |

I have heard small dogs can be very good and alpha with big dogs. So long as they are small and sturdy? I would be concerned that a two or three pound dog would get hurt. :( Heard so many sad stories on here about them being fragile. |

How horrible that someone would do something like that.:( I was definitely concerned about the size difference with our dogs. My Yorkie is 8lbs so he isn't as tiny as some. I would really love a tiny Yorkie 2-3 lbs, but I don't think they could handle it with Bailey (the lab) She does get a little to rough for my liking sometimes. Although to be fair Duke will go over and jump on her, bite her ears and start most of the trouble..lol I think if you socialize the dogs together and give them both lots of love you should be fine. :D |
Sounds like lots of fun to have a bigger dog and smaller-best of both worlds. :) So would you recommend I go for a slightly larger yorkie? seven pounds etc? |

If you are concerned about the size then you could go with a little bigger Yorkie. It really depends on the personality of the Shar Pei. I knew from the start that Bailey would be a little rough. She was always rough with my daughters cat before they moved out, but again the cat gave the dog what for...lol I had never seen a dog get chased by a cat. :p See how things go. When you find that special little one you will know it, and things will fall into place from there.:animal36 |
I have a black lab and a yorkie and they get along great. I had the lab for 2 1/2 years before we got our yorkie, but they took right to each other. My yorkie LOVES the lab and can't be away from her...they really are each other's companions. My lab is a pretty laid back dog so I think she has the temprement to get along with any animal. My yorkie thinks she is the alpha dog but if she is scared or upset she expects Molly to protect her and take care of her...very cute. My yorkie is a bit bigger than most...13 1/2 lbs to be exact...found out today. So she isn't as fragile as maybe a teacup yorkie would be, but my sister has a 4 lb yorkie who gets a long well with my dogs and can pretty much hold his own around them. I love s**t zhu's too so that would be a good breed...but 2 yorkies would be cute as well. If they come at the same time and from the same litter they will grow up not knowing any different. Good luck!! Post pics when you have decided :) |
Scruffs is 7 lbs and he is the perfect size. Good for laps, but still can go on 1-2 hr walks, run around at the park, etc. I think a dog 6-8 lb range would be good. In my experience, the little ones (2-4 lb) I met were always timid. I can't imagine having a dog who is scared of everything. Are you getting a puppy or adult dog? Maybe a retired show dog, or a dog they raised to like a year but decided not to show or something like that would be good. That way they are socialized already. Scruffs wasn't very socialized but I take him places a lot (pet stores, parks, dog parks) so I think that is what made him adjust. I think the majority of dogs out there will adjust to living with another dog, even if they bark at first (except super aggressive dogs). I don't know if that is true, but I've known a lot of dogs like that. |
