To get a sibling or not.... I wasn't sure where to post this but this seems as good a place as any! My boyfriend is moving in with me next month and we have noticed so many nights Layla just being lonely... we play with her but sometimes she will just go off in the corner and not want to play. I feel like I'm not enough for her I guess! I've always wanted to give her a sibling, but at the same time I am scared that I'm betraying her by looking for another dog. I wish she could speak and tell me what she wants! My boyfriend just called the condo association, and if we want another dog we will just have to apply for approval. So that's what it has come down to... Deciding if yes we want one, or no we don't. I love dogs so it definitely wouldn't bother me having another around, and i have the money for vet costs, extra food, etc. I found an adorable 7 month old pomeranian/chihuahua mix that is being rehomed, and my boyfriend is wanting us to go see her. So before we do any of this, I wanted some opinions. For those with two, what are the pros and cons of 2 instead of 1? How did you make the decision to get another dog? |
I'm glad that you have thought about all of the cost, time, etc. before jumping in and getting another puppy. Has Layla ever had puppy friends over? If not, I would want to see how she reacts to others being in her territory. I just think that it would make the transition easier, but I'm sure that others may have not had friends over before introducing another sibling. If she has had friends over and is fine and loves to play with them, and the condo board agrees, then yes, I would go ahead and get her a buddy. Sasha is an olny child (although she's only 5 months old) but in about a year or 2 if all goes well, I think I would want another furbaby also. I'm just getting started in dog shows. She likes when Kelsey (cousin) comes over to play. She also likes the cats in the neighbor hood and wants to play with them too, (doesn't bark or chase)but I don't think that the cats like her. lol. Good luck on your decision. |
Thanks for the reply! She hasn't had any other dogs in our home before, just in the dog park and friends' houses. She actually seems to be really shy around other dogs. I took her to puppy classes when she was 2 years old just to get her more used to it! I feel like having another dog around all the time might get her out of her shell and teach her how to play with other dogs too. She's so used to just having just people around all the time. |
Hi!! Well I was concerned before I got another dog just like you. I have had Kayne for 2 years and this past April purchased another yorkie to keep him company. He has had friends spend the night and things before I got Able. I think the hardest thing for me was grooming costs, training one dog while having a do that knows what to do, and Kayne's jealousy. I think that it is good for a dog to have a companion if it is feasible for the owner. Kayne has gotten better with Able being around, but still likes his one on one time. I think Able appreciates Kayne being around the most though. I would say that it will be an adjustment for you both, but in the end it will work out! Good luck and keep YT posted on the transition. I definetly think 2 are better than one, that's why I have five!:D |
Thanks for all the advice! We're still discussing it daily! I guess in order to get approved or denied by the condo board, we need to fill out an application with the information and picture of the dog we want. So basically we will be getting our heart set on getting a little guy or girl and maybe getting denied :( But we will be picking up a form next week just in case we decided to use it. |
Well, here I am, still deciding. I have a few dogs in mind... there are some adorable little mixed breeds at the shelter that I want to go see, and I have come across an ad for a 9 month old yorkie girl who needs to be rehomed... I am falling in love with all of the pictures but then I feel like holding back! I'm so nervous about making the wrong decision! With two maybe it will be harder to travel. Maybe it will be harder to train. Maybe it will be harder to go to the dog park. Maybe Layla won't want "mommy time" anymore :( I need some more convincing that two is better than one! Maybe Layla will be much happier! She will definitely be more active, and she really needs that. Another dog can keep her entertained while I'm busy with other things. Maybe I can have two cuddle bugs instead of just one :) Any other opinions? What changed when you got a second dog? |
Sorry another question... I just read this article which is saying DO NOT get another dog of the same sex because they are more likely to fight, and maybe fight to the death  Adding a Second Dog to Your Family - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! I would prefer getting another girl because I live in a condo and Layla is pee pad trained, and I know there's ways to get around it with a boy but I really just think it would be easier with a female... I know there are a lot here with same-gender fursiblings, so I'd really appreciate some input :) |
bump? |
I have 3 female yorkies and until my female pom passed earlier this year had 4 females all brought in at different times. They have little spats nothing horrible, mostly just play fighting and then they all snuggle up together. I love having multiples as when I am gone they have each other and I really think they like having each other. They are all still very loving to me too. I say go for it!! |
I have six females and three males and right now two puppies and they all do well together. It really depends on the pack leader and my fur babies know I won't abide with fighting. Mine also range from 3.9 lbs to 17 lbs so size doesn't matter either. |

Well we have 3 dogs and one cat. the cat is a neutered male, but our 2 Black Russian Terriers and Razzle our Yorkie are all unneutered. It does make travelling a little different but if you get another small dog you could probably buy a travel crate that 2 can fit in. In terms of getting a dog of the same sex I think that what is important is what is the character of the current dog? How dominant is this dog. How does she play with others -etc? Now you mentioned her going off into a corner on her own as something that concerns you. Most dogs do need some alone time. But apart from that it sounds like you just recently moved, and are also considering another large adjustment in your life - that of your boyfriend moving in. She maybe is responding to the new place, maybe an increase of time your boyfriend is coming over, etc. As I write this note Razzle is laying beside me. Magic at my feet - but Zoey is lying down upstairs in the living room. The cat is nesting on his tower. So my experience has b een that the animals take turns on alone time, sometimes everyone is in the garden room, sometimes one, sometimes 2 or three. Hope this helps Gail in Ontario |
Thank you for all your responses! My boyfriend and I have taken everything into consideration and decided that we should just stick with Layla for now. After three months living in our condo, she has just started to calm down about people walking up and down the halls and opening doors. I think bringing another dog in would just reverse her training and encourage her to bark more. In a house, I would be okay with that for awhile, but in a condo it's my responsibility to make sure any pet is quiet... if there are complaints, I can get a 7 day notice to have my pet privileges revoked. I would be risking not only giving up a new dog, but Layla too, and I just couldn't live with that. So we have decided that every night we are going to give Layla at least one consecutive hour of our 100% full undivided attention. We will play, train, take her for walks, just make sure she is staying stimulated. It gets too cold in the winter for much time outside, but a friend of mine is already organizing a doggy day at her house this weekend, and hopefully more will come if it's successful. I think it's a great idea for socializing our little dogs in the winter months! Thanks again for all your information! |
