Yorkies and Cats Hello All, I have been researching yorkies to adopt. I live in the city (Chicago). I really want to make sure this is the right decision for me and my adorable cat, Qtip. How do yorkies (considering a puppy or an adult) respond to and interact with cats? Mine tolerates my parent's terrier/pug mix, and to be honest, the dog does chase the cat a bit. There is less hissing from the cat after repeat visits, and I did separate them via baby gate initially, and they sniffed one another through that. The yorkie thing will be unique in that the dog will be smaller than the cat (7lbs). Any thoughts/ suggestions? p.s. I tried to upload a photo of Qtip for ya, but it says the files are too big. Trust me, she's a cutie. :animal-pa |
my yorkie loves my cats but you have to get them use to them when they are babys though! |
My yorkie usually ignores my cat. Only occasionally does he feel like playing. Usually, if you are rescuing, the foster parent will have an idea of how the dog interacts with cats. I would definately arrange for a pre-meeting with the dog and Qtip to see how they get on. Keep in mind, when I first brought my cat in (he was a stray) my yorkie was VERY interested in him, but as time went on, he couldn't care less and is fine with the cat. I think every dog is different. Just have to try it out before you make a commitment. Good luck!! |
My yorkie was about 7 months when we brought her home. We have an almost 18 yr old cat and 1 1/2 yr old yellow lab. I was worried about how they would all get along. When we got the lab (at 8 wks) the cat tolerated her but once she got a little bigger the cat decided it was time to retire upstairs. LOL we have a baby gate at the bottom that the cat can get through and every now and then she'll come all the way down but usually is happy to hang out a few steps up. ;) Charlotte spends a lot of time upstairs with the cat, while we're gone during the day and evenings with me playing. She loves the cat and tries to play but mostly gets the cold shoulder. I think she respects her elder but still tries to get her to play. They both sleep on the bed during the day, sometimes fairly close to one another. I'm sure it's adorable to see....I only see the body indents on the pillows. LOL |
