Young Kitten Help needed... My sisters dog found a litter of kittens in her garage. He killed one of them and injured another leaving 4 kittens. The injured one passed away but she bottle fed the remaining litter. She had a friend take two in and the other she had at her house. Anywho, my sisters son and her husband are very allergic so I told her I would take the kitten until the kitten finds a home. Now I am such a dog person and want to make sure she is comfy. My BF keeps laughing because I expect her to lick my face like a puppy. Now what do I do? The kitten is eatting soft food and is very active. My sister allowed her access to th house and was training her to a pee pad. So I brought her home last night and fed her some food, how much do I feed her and how often? I have just been giving her food as she wants but she has a big belly and has yet to go poo since last night. I'm I feeding her too much? Should I get some kitty litter? Also right now I put her in a xpen with a soft sided carrier and a snuggle sac, any other ways to keep her comfy? Any advice would be appreciated. I have never had a cat let alone a kitten and this feels very different. PS I have no clue how old she is, but my sister said she has had her only a few weeks. My BF seems to think she is less then 5-6 weeks old? |

You should have food and water available to the kitty at all times. Is she eating solid food? If she is you will definitely want to make sure she's eating kitten chow because cats need taurine and cat food has it added. If she's having trouble eating solid food you can just soften it with water or give canned cat food. The cat may not poop without a litter box. Most cats won't poop unless they have some way to bury their feces. What you've given her so far for comfort sounds great! My kitties just love to snuggle in a blanket but oddly enough also enjoying sleeping on their backs on the hard wood floors. Hope this helps! |
I agree with your BF. She looks about 6 weeks old and very snuggly! |
Yes, I agree, water and food at all times. Cats, unlike dogs will only eat what they need. Kittens will definitely need to eat regularly. Definitely get a litter box, it is instinctive of cats to dig. You may have to take her there and put her in the box initially but she will get it. I wish I lived closer, I love cats. We lost our 2 after 12 and 13 years last year. I am torn as to whether to get any more cats though. Good luck in finding a home. |
I don't know much about cats- I had one growing up- we always free fed her- she just seemed to eat when she was hungry- but boy that is one cute kitty :D does she have a name? |
I have a dish of water for her and have been giving her canned cat food. I just want to make sure because her belly looks so fat. My nephew named her "Popcorn" but when she finds a new home she probably will be renamed. My BF loves her but he is allergic too, but our house is a lot bigger then my sisters, so here the kitten has half of the house to herself so she shouldn't bother him too much. She is very playful and I just spent the last hour playing with her. (she loves to play with ribbons and balls.) I am off to the store to see about a litter box. |

Is there a difference between cat and puppy shampoo? I washed her today using our puppy shampoo because she was a bit messy. |
I went to the store and bought the feline cat litter (pine) because they said it was not as dusty as the clay and since she has never used litter it should be a easy transition. I also picked up a bag of kitten food and since the kibble is extra small she started eatting it right away. :) |

Her belly may look big because she is a kitten. If she is as young as you think, you may need to give her some supplemental milk type of food. I would ask the people at the pet store, they should be able to help you, for sure ask the manager to be safe. You should probably think about a brush for her as they shed so she will ingest hair and she will love to be brushed. Oh, if she is in the expen, don't be surprised if she climbs out, cats do that very easily. lol. Good luck in find that cutie a home. She looks like a real cutie! |
If she is eating solid food there is no need for kitten milk. Her belly could be big because she has parasites. I would get some wormer for her. Check her gums and see if they are pink or pale. If they are pale she needs to be wormed. All kittens need to be wormed anyway. You will need to show her to use the box and keep her in a small area with the box. If you leave her in a larger area she might not be able to hold herself to get back the the litterbox. I would also go by the kitten food bag as how much to feed her. She does look about 6 weeks old. I would guess her weight to be about 1 1/2 pounds. Good luck in finding a new home for her. Maybe you will fall in love and keep her. I have 12 cats myself and have bottle fed many and it is easy to get attached to them. |
I was just going to say the same thing about the parasites. If you can it's probably best to take her to a vet and have her checked and wormed. I'd be afraid to use anything over the counter. And, yes I'd say about five weeks old or so. I bottle fed a little kitten and he was about three weeks old when I got him and she looks more alert then he was. Elaine |
Kitty found a home. :) My sister made sure to have her vet checked before I picked her up to make sure everything was going well. I ended up picking some more food that the vet recommended, so I send that along with her. She didn't have any worms when they tested her stool, I think maybe it was because she didn't have a litter box that her tummy was bloated. As soon as I put the litter box in there she started exploring it and has been using it for the last few days. :) Thank you everyone for the help. :) |
So glad to hear that the kitty found a forever home. BTW, the pics you've posted of the kitten are really cute. |
