What should I get!? So I've decided that I'd like to get another dog, I have Bunni but since I had to give away my cat Stella, (I was oh so allergic, she gave me baseball sized hives after awhile!) she's been kind of lonely. I'm debating on what I should get. I've narrowed it down to three breeds that I would like to look more into, I want a more small to mid sized dog this time around. I'm thinking about a Beagle, a Dachshund or a Miniature Schnauzer. I had a Beagle as a kid and this is a dog I think my boyfriend will "feel like is a real dog" as well as a Schnauzer (he had a standard as a kid) but Dachshunds are so cute! I can't decide!!! Anyone have any advice? Does anyone know if one breed out of the three are better with allergies (just incase)? |
I have no advice but good luck finding your new baby :) |
1 Attachment(s) I have a Daschund! :) Spike is the sweetest most lovable dog I've ever had. They have a lot of endurance and energy, but aren't super hyper. I attached a picture of my little boy! :) As far as beagles, my neighbor has one and its a spaz. Every time he is outside, he is jumping around like a mexican jumping bean. sheesh. |
Schnauzer's are the only one that has Non shedding hair like yorkie's. Good luck on your search Dogs Good For Allergy Suffers, Hypo-allergenic dogs |
The only breed I'd want out of those is a Beagle and I'm okay without one...just personal preference. Have you looked into Norfolks, Cavaliers, Pugs? |
I think what ever you decide on maybe you should spend time with the breed for a bit before getting that way you can see if your allergies act up. good luck. |
1 Attachment(s) I LOVE Mini Schnauzers. Here is a pic of our Phoebe. They are totally non shedding. I love that about them. She weighs 19lbs. Not too big, not too small. |
Of those , a mini Schnauzer would be my pick. My SIL has 5 Daschunds and they bark sooooo much at everything or nothing at all ! Also it seems every time I am around them for long my eyes feel itchy. My old neighbor had two beagles that did NOTHING BUT HOWL every time they were alone  So I guess I prefer the schnauzer because it's the only one out of the three that I haven't been driven nuts by :) Besides , I think they are cute:) |
Daschund Daschund!! That woudl be my choice. :D However, all three breeds are allergic dogs; you may want to "test your allergies" before you get one. BUT I LOVE Daschunds!! Not as much as yorkies though. :p :p :p |
I have a miniature daschund and she is awesome! My husband adores her, everyone seems to like her the most of the two dogs when they come visit us. She is very friendly and playful and laid back. She's an awesome dog. |

I'm intolerably miserably allergic to cats, and all dogs that shed bother me quite a bit as well, even the small ones, which is part of why I got a yorkie. Of your list, I would go for a schnauzer. I grew up with schnauzers, and they never bothered my allergies so long as they got a quick bath about once a week or once every two weeks. And even if they didn't, it wasn't so bad - at least their hair wasn't all over the house all the time. On top of that, they are some of the smartest and most loyal terriers I've ever had the pleasure of being around. I actually have plans to perhaps someday, when we have a bigger place, give Nikko a mini schnauzer playmate. :-) Shhhhhh don't tell my DH though! Lauren & Nikko |
my dad has a beagle and he is very 'vocal' which I think is quite typical of the breed. I like cavaliers as someone else suggested - my mum has two and they are great dogs - although they do leave a lot of hair. I've no personal experience of Schnauzers or Dachsunds, but they certainly look cute! Or how about another yorkie?:D Good luck with your search xxxx xxx |
Have you considered a Basenji? They are small-medium, don't bark, shed little to no hair and even clean themselves like a cat and they have no doggy odour!!!(They are considered a good choice for allergy sufferers!) Basenji, Information and Pictures, Basenjis, Dog that does not bark They come in lots of colours and are very cute!!! |
I have a suggestion outside of those 3 - how about a havanese? My MIL has one and they are a little on the bigger side (he's probably about 15-ish lbs) and is very sturdy. They don't have him long haired like you'll see on the google pictures. He kind of reminds me of a cocker spaniel. He's really, really sweet and he's a hypoallergenic breed. My BIL has dog allergies and Ace is really his dog and he's fine with it. My MIL is also allergic to cats and she's fine with him in the house too. Doxies are cute, but personally, I'd be afraid with their backs. I know they have spine troubles sometimes. I could never have one because I would constantly be paranoid lol. Beagles are amazing dogs too, but I don't think I could deal with a lot of howling. Of the 3 you mentioned, Schnauzer has my vote! |
