Basset Hounds? So I live with my brother and he came home tonight and said he is bringing home a basset hound. His friend's wife's boss is moving and can't take her two year old basset hound, Winchester, with her so she's giving him away for free to anyone who will give him a good home. Will he be okay with Layla? She's a bigger yorkie, around 9-10 lbs. My brother is off from work for two weeks so he will be picking up the dog and taking him to my parents' house for Christmas. I will be going there with Layla in the middle of next week, so any contact they have with each other will be supervised all the time for at least a week. And if he's trained to go outside and Layla is trained to use pee pads, will that change things? She is 3 years old but I'm gone for 10 hours a day for work so it's easier to keep her going on pads. Usually she sleeps through the day and doesn't go anyway. Do you think maybe the new dog will encourage her to go outside too? I don't know much about basset hounds at all, so any info would be appreciated! |
My Mum had 2 bassetts & they are so sweet. I can't see any problem... |
I don't personally have one but there is a girl that goes to the dog park that has a small (probably 5-6lb) Yorkie with a huge, HUGE like, 40lb Basset Hound. They play together, it's really sweet. She said she's never had a problem with them together. |
I love Bassets! A member on another forum has four Maltese and a Basset and they do beautifully together. |
we have a 3 year old Yorkie and a 6 year old Bassett Hound. They get along ok most of the time. They sometimes fight over the food bowl, but the Yorkie always wins. We just got a new 3 month old yorkie girl last night and they have done fine so far. |
How big would the basset be? My brother has never even seen him. He thought he'd be around the same as Layla or just a bit bigger, and a lot sturdier. Layla stands about 9 inches at the shoulder. I'm glad to hear they have sweet dispositions though! Now we just have to convince my landlord... and my other roommate is a little angry about it. She isn't a huge fan of Layla in the first place, and apparently the landlord told JUST HER when she moved in that there are no other pets allowed. But we're in a duplex and I know the guy next door has two poms so I don't know how we'd just be limited to one... plus there's nothing stated in our contract at all about number of pets. I told my brother to just call him a few days after Christmas and say he got this dog as a Christmas present and he hopes it's okay that he lives here... and if not then my brother will have to move out. |
Bump! And a few more questions in case there are answers here... I joined a Basset forum but don't have permission to post yet :( Is the shedding REALLY bad? My roommate said the dog better be downstairs ALL THE TIME because she won't stand to have hair on her clothes or the furniture (MY furniture). And do they really drool and slobber a lot? Like if he played with Layla's toys would they need washing? lol... I never jump into anything this fast and I need to do research. My brother is just like "Oh free dog I'll take it" without knowing anything about the breed. And I'm absolutely sure I'll be the one looking after the dog anyway because I can't even trust Layla with him if I go away for a weekend. I'm stressing out a little... I mean I'm very excited and I hope he gets along with Layla and they become buddies so she's not so lonely, but at the same time I can't stop thinking of all the problems we might have! |
My sister and BIL have a Basset mix and he weighs 60 pounds. He is over 2 years old, so he is very lazy. He sleeps all day everyday, unless they take him to the dog park or for a walk, and then he is pretty full of energy. He doesn't really play with toys, and Bassets are very laid back dogs, so I don't know if he will be that interested in the toys. He drools quite a bit when he sleeps, but that is the only time he does it. He does shed ALOT! Their whole house is covered in hair, and she says that he is just spreading his love around! LOL! He is a very sweet dog though, and I would recommend the breed to anyone! Hope that helps you out some! If you have any other questions or concerns, just ask and I might be able to help more. |
Thanks so much! I'm glad to hear about the drooling lol... I hate going to the dog park right after bathing Layla just to have a dog drool on her! But I think I can deal if it's just when he's sleeping. And the hair... well that's the main reason I wanted a yorkie. It's why I couldn't live with a cat! I wonder if it would help a lot to brush daily (which I'm absolutely sure my brother will never do). |
1 Attachment(s) I have a Basset (Flash) and she gets along great with my Yorkies. She's a little more energetic than the stereotypical, laid back Basset, but my 3 don't seem to mind too much. As long as the dog gets along well with dogs, I would think they'd be just fine together. (Don't ask me what she is doing with her eye in this picture!?) |
lol she looks mid-wink! So adorable! |
She's a big ole goof ball. There are 3 Bassets on our street and they all bay at each other all the time. :p Only think with her that I have found to be a real pain is that her ears get soooooo dirty. You have to clean them constantly. |
