Hmmm, i don't know what to do with this little piggie Does anyone own a guinea pig? My son got to take the class guinea pig home while off school this month. I've never had a guinea pig before so i'm not sure what to do with her or how to read her actions/noises. We've been told that if this works out that she really needs a new home (the teacher has found out she is extremely allergic) and of course my son wants to keep her but we have to get on speaking terms with this little thing first. How do I get her used to me? She lets me hold her but i can tell she doesn't really like it or care for me to pet her. Do they bond with people? Do they even like to be held? Also, i can tell she was not taken care of well. Her nails are unspeakably long and i'm terrified to cut them. Do typical vets treat guinea pigs? |
A guinea pig is actually one pet I haven't owned LOL but they are SO cute! Browniesmom622 has one. You'll probably have to find an vet that works with exotics/pocket pets |
Thanks michelle, i just found her guinea pig posts hopefully she'll have some wisdom for me:p |

I've had Guinea pig's all my life There not as easy as people think to care for & VERY expensive She need's to see an Exotic's vet mine charge's $59 just for an exam Other regular vet's know NOTHING about Guinea pig's. Some Pig's like to be held some don't, Try holding her After she has floorTime she will lounge on you lap. They need a Very large cage. http://www.guineapigcages.com/ Daily Veggie's 1 cup A day http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html Lots of exercise outside the cage Get an xpen or cubes http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/asse...013652600P.JPG http://www.guineapigcages.com/floortime.htm They must have Hay avaliable all the time. We feed oxbow pellet's it's the 5 star of guniea pig food. I'm going to start litter training Ginger so i only have to clean the pan. for bedding aspen or fleece is the best the other can cause serious health problem's http://www.guinealynx.com/bedding.html Trimming nail's. http://www.guinealynx.com/nails.html There sound's. http://www.jackiesguineapiggies.com/...pigsounds.html What kind of hair does she have ? If she an abby with crazy spiky hair they do not like being pet down there back. it's important to pet in the direction the hair is growing. Ginger like's to be pet on the bridge on her nose. & you may wanna get her a Neutered male friend or a Sister From a RESCUE ! :D http://www.guinealynx.com/quarantine.html http://www.guinealynx.com/sexing_pups.html http://www.guinealynx.com/companionship.html |

Once you get her on a good diet she will only shed alittle bit. Only longhaired Guniea pig's need a bath Unless she is VERY dirty http://www.guinealynx.com/grooming.html |
Oh my gosh Lenora, thank you for all the info. She does have a spiky back and you are right, she hates for me to pet her there, now that makes a lot of sense. Her only diet has been the food you buy walmart. My husband brought home some alfalfa hay yesterday and at first she had no idea what it was but we got her to start eating it and she seems to love it. Her name is Penelope and we have no idea how old she is. I believe she has been passed around a bit. I know that she was at a preschool for some time, and then my son't teacher took her in and has had her for 2 years atleast. So she might be quite old. |
Make sure you get Timothy Hay, Alfafa hay is for 6 months & under & pregnant female's. Order some oxbow pellet's http://www.oxbowhay.com/link.sp?page=products & No Treat's From the store's All they are is Sugar & make sure the food you bought has no seed's or those colorful pieces, They can choke on them. Stick to Plain Pellet's |
Oh & post some pic's !! |
4 Attachment(s) Ok here she is! I cleaned out her cage real good today so i set up the xpen in the kitchen so she could have some play time and we could have a good visit with her. (Until she peed all over my oldest son LOL) She was scared and didn't move around much but we did hold her and had some good quality time to begin with. Bo our golden retriever is ever the protector, he would really like to have some time with her without the pen, but that will have to wait for now. I gave her a paper bag to play with and she really liked it. She messed with it a bit and then bounced in and out and back in and finally her behind was just left hanging out for a good nap.:D |

SHe's so cute !! & a tubby one !! |
HOW cute is that picture!? omg! LOL. She is precious, but that butt picture made me laugh like an idiot. I had one guniea pig, Nelly. My dad found him abandoned in the park he works at a few years ago. I think their noises are something that they each have individually kind of. Like with Nelly, if he was freaked out or hungry he would squeak REALLY loudly and hold them out for a really long time. If he was happy or just sitting there he would make really short, somewhat quiet squeaks. and at the end of his life, he had a really awful sickness of somekind, and whenever we picked him up or petted him, he would squeal in pain very similarly to the sound he made when he was scared. They tend to just talk a lot. I think that when he starts making different kind of squeaks, you'll be able to pick up on what she's trying to tell you. Good luck! She's cute. :p |

Aw, she's a cutie. I had a black and white male piggy named Max who weighed four pounds. He was very tame and loved to snuggle under my chin and "chuff" making little noises of contentment. He would whistle when he heard the refrigerator open, hoping for a treat. He loved attention and thought my Bichon girl was his mom. My granddaughter, Brianna, loved him and was very gentle with him. I really love this picture. |
