Shih Tzu Puppy Losing Hair I just got a Shih Tzu Puppy and she is losing hair!! She is only 11 weeks and she is losing hair on her face and around her ears. When i got her i thought her hair was a little on the short side but i didn't worry because the breed said it was only because she is so small. (She is only 1.8 lbs at 11 weeks) Some of her siblings had shorter hair than her and some were little fur balls but their hair seemed to be longer based on their age. She has been losing hair since the day i got her and the vet says it is probably just a food allergy. He put her on KO puppy and said it would clear up in a few days. Now he is considering a new food since it isn't getting better. Does anyone know anything about this? |
Sounds like allergy to me. Wow, that is a tiny Shih-tzu... |
Yes i had a foster dog that 3 vets said he was allergic to himself...and chopped pieces of skin off him ...I was SOOOO MAD. The owner was a vegetarian and only bought organic special dog food. I refused to let the dog see another vet. I took photos of him with the stitches, one even cut the skin off the top of his muzzle. I cried all day when this dog came in to my care. I fed him boiled chicken and rice. He looked good in 3 weeks, he later was adopted and switched to a chicken and rice dry food. I don't know if will work for your dog, but you could try. Also they kept putting creams on him and he was rubbing on the carpet so much that he had rug burns...I tossed the cream...again he was fine, no more rug burns or bald spots. I am guessing he was already checked for ear mites. Antibiotics sometimes work. Good Luck |
do you have any pictures? sounds a little worringing, have you taken her to a different vet? eta: thats a real small shih tzu |
If it's a pup it could also be a type of mange. Nursing mothers are very prone to it and it is passed easily to the pups. Do a google search on the internet and look at pictures to see if they look like your little babies face. I could be very off, but it's just a suggestion. |
My Shih tzu had the same issue. I ended up on Natures Variety Raw and it got better. But it took 8 months of testing and food switching. We finally decided it was poor breeding and a not so great environment as a baby that caused it. She is better now and very cute too. But she stayed small. Vet thinks all she went through stunted her growth. |
