Italian Greyhound! Is there anyone here at YT that own or have owned an Italian Greyhound? Can you tell me some things about them! Do they make good pets, are they runners like the big Greyhound or would they make good lap dogs? Thanks to any info I can get!:animal-pa |
you asked :) I used to have one. I loved him to pieces, but will never have one again. my experience was horrible...BUT...I also lived in an apartment and worked full time. so I wasn't able to give him the exercise he needed. If you have a lifestyle that would allow you to give an "Iggy" LOTS AND LOTS of exercise, he would probably make a great pet. I will say this....they are VERY VERY hard to potty train. I had SOOOO much trouble with him...and I have never had trouble potty training any dog. He enjoyed pooping and peeing in his crate and playing in it. I would come home every day at lunch to let him out and he would have to have a bath. I would walk in the room and want to puke. and it's not like I would leave him for long...I worked at the apartment complex I lived at and would come home every chance I got to let him out. as much as every 2 hours. but he just enjoyed playing in his mess. it was the weirdest thing ever!!! on the positive side...he was one of the sweetest, most loving, most fun loving dogs I have ever seen. He was so incredibly cute and a LOT of fun (when he wasn't covered in poo). They are really hilarious dogs. if it was wet outside, he would walk on his front legs when we went out. It cracked me up. and yes, they run REALLY fast :D |
A good friend had one and couldn't housebreak him and he broke his leg jumping down as their legs are so thin. He was a sweetie. |

 Oh, I did not want to hear that. I did not think they would be hard to house break. My dad and I had been thinking about getting my mom one!:thumbdown |
they are very hyper, have a very short attention span, and this, I believe, is one of the reasons (in addition to their VERY small bladder) that they are so hard to housebreak. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a picture of my Iggy...Theo gosh...he was a sweetie :) his ears never did lay to the side like they were supposed to...so he had MAJOR radar ears :D |

What about a whippet? I have lots of friends that have whippets. They do need lots of exercise, but I've never heard any complaints as far as potty training. Whippets are like the medium size greyhound. They are usually in the 20 pound range. |

I have heard that the retired grey hounds (full size) make great pets. However, I had read a story, not sure if it was on YT . That a man was out walking his yorkie and a grey hound attacked his yorkie. I know they train these (racing) dogs to chase small animals. I don't know if it would be a good idea to get an adult (if used for racing) if you own a small animal. I do know people that have the mini ones and love them! Good Luck! |
My mom has two IG's. They came from a pet store (puppy mill) and have a lot of health problems. Both have broken their leg, lost most of their teeth, and one has seizures. I'm sure this is based on where they came from though. They are very sweet, nice dogs. They are potty trained and quiet, and while they like to run, they're actually surprisingly happy relaxing most of the day! |
I had one when I was younger and they are INCREDIBLY difficult to housbrake!! This coming from an owner of Yorkies and we all know how hard it can be to housebrake a Yorkie. Italian Greyhounds are also known for being super super sensitive and nervous. Just do your research and read up on the breed. Tammy |

I definately wouldn't recommend getting a full size one if you have a yorkie. Since they're trained to chase rabbits, it's easy for them to mistake a yorkie for a stuffed rabbit. :( |
