Overweight? Is there a different test for cats than for dogs to see if they're overweight? I'm worried about Lily...she's been chubby (she has one of those kitty pooches hanging down from her belly ) ever since she was staying with my ex and he let her eat kitten food for awhile... She had a lot of health problems when she was younger, and is basically a miracle cat, so I worry about her constantly. She has such a small frame, her ideal weight is around 5.5-6 lbs (yes she's a really small cat)...but she weighs about 7 now!! |
The visual chart is the same http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IA...rticleID=230#1 My cat has a pooch, but that came with age. My cat is in no way fat or overweight, she has a lean/athletic figure but with a pooch. |

I think the pooch comes with age. I just noticed one on our cat April (she will be 4 this year). But then again she has been eating like a trucker....lol. She looks slim but she has the pooch. I guess watching her next to the likes of Lulu (:rip:) and Zoey it also makes her look ginormous. |
Female cats that have been spayed get that "pooch" as they age. As long as the rest of her is thin, I wouldn't worry. Your vet is the best judge of a proper weight for her. |
They way cats look also depends a lot on their breed (or what breed they favor most). Persians are big boned and are supposed to look chunky and have that pooch (although you can't see it with all that hair) whereas Siamese cats should be quite slender. You should be able to feel the ribs pretty easily on any cat though. |
I can't feel her ribs... Well, not unless I push in with a lot of pressure. She's only 2 1/2 years old, but she has been spayed. The vet said she was a little overweight the last time he saw her (when he did her rabies), and she's even fatter now...:( Should I put her on scheduled feedings? Oh and she was a rescue, her mom was feral and she was wild as a kitten, noone could handle her. She loved me instantly and there was no turning back from there lol...so I have no idea what she is...just a DMH as far as I know... |
