Tips for 7 week old kitten 2 Attachment(s) We just brought home a super tiny 7 week old kitten. I think she's probably no more than 1 lb and she fits in the palm of my husbands hand. She's such a little princess though! Anyways, does anyone here have experience with helping an abadoned kitten grow into a sweet, playful loving adult? Any tips would be great. Since she's so tiny right now we have her in the bathroom with a bed and a couple toys, a towel laying across the floor, a heating pad with a towel wrapped around it, wet kitten food, water, and a litter box. Anything else? |
Sounds like you are doing well! I've got two cats, both adopted as kittens from a shelter. One of them was too young to be in the shelter but they had no choice and took her, and amazingly I showed up like 30 minutes after she arrived...so I took her! She picked me too, because her claws stuck in my shirt and she would'nt let go. Anyhow she was very young, maybe just a few weeks and weighed less than a pound...didn't hardly register on the vets scale. Anyhow, we did the same ... made one room "hers" that we could close the door and had comfortable blankets, food, water and we got a tiny disposable aluminum baking pan to be her litterbox. Oh, toys, we put toys in there. And I'd go visit her all the time in there. And during the day we'd let her roam if she wanted to. We had another kitty that was maybe 2 mos old, and it took a while for her to get used to this new little one, but in no time they became pals. Anyhow, the tiny one eventually got braver & braver and bigger & bigger and would come out and roam the house. So,...you're doing good. Just play with her alot. :) |

My roommate rescued a kitten last year that was about 7-8 weeks. She was SO TINY! She actually had the same markings as yours. We went and got her some kitten formula because she was really dehydrated and didn't want to drink water or eat regular food. Make sure you play with her and socialize with her a LOT! She should be just fine! |
I grew up with tons of kittens on our farm. Usually kittens start to eat solid food at 5 weeks. At 7 weeks she should be fine. If you don't think she's eating or drinking enough buy kitten formula. If she acts as if she doesn't know what to do with it gently push her face into the mixture (this sounds mean, but it's not, just enough to get a little milk on her mouth). She will lick the formula off her face & then begin to lap it up herself. if she's eating and drinking she will be super fine. Just spend lots of time with her so she gets used to people. I found a 3 week old kitten that had been abandoned by her mother, she had such a strong will to live that she would fight off the bigger cats to get to the food. I just made sure I gave her formula & soft food that she could eat & she turned out wonderfully. |
She has a lot of weight to gain. You can feel her spine and ribs when you pick her up so do you think kitten formula will help her gain some weight? |

You say she's wobbly, does she sneeze or shake her head a lot. I'm sure she's just starved and weak, but if her coordination is off & she carries her head off to one side she might be in the late stages of distemper. |

Good luck with your new kitty..sounds like you are doing all the right things!!  |
I am fostering two kittens still from when they were three weeks old ( they are almost 5 months already!) This is my mix that I gave for quite awhile: I started with kitten milk watered down, I switched to goats milk after one can of kitten milk was finished. some oatmeal baby cereal and some dry kitten food. They thrived on it. If your baby is dehydrated or you feel she needs alittle more to get her going then use pedialite instead of water. I would give them alittle of the mixture three times a day and I left dry food down for them at all times. Does she know how to use the litter box? My vet also gave me "val syrup" they are vitamins that I used for all my kittens that I had raised and they thrived on it. I have used the vitamins for when I had lab puppies here and almost lost one. PM me if you need any help! |
4 Attachment(s) She perked up quite a bit yesterday and is definately not scared at all. She looooves attention and loves to be cuddled. We let her out (very supervised) to introduce Lexy to the older kitten (Mojo) and suprisingly he was just follow her around sniffing her. He took a couple play swats at her (claws were in, ears up). I think he's going to end up being protective over her. After awhile though (like an hour), he did get cranky with her and started growling, so we seperated them again. Anyways, I took a couple more pictures of her! |
You might want to get the kitten combo tested to make sure she doesn't have lukemia or feline aids. She can pass it to your other cat. Lukemia is very easy to transmit but feline aids is usually transmitted from a deep bite. Cats only, they cannot give it to dogs or people. And she is old enough for her first 3 way shot to protect her from Panluekopenia. She is really cute. |
