The Cat :(

Things are not going well with the cat. Layla has now decided she is scared of him. Every night we play fetch and the cat will hide behind something and jump out at her.. im not sure if he is trying to play or pounce on her... she growls at him when she sees him and insists on sitting next to someone all the time... she hates eating if he is around because he always tries to come and take it from her... short of locking the cat in the basement i just don't knwo what to do.... this is not going well for Layla at all.. the cat on the other hand is so bold.. he is everyhwere on our furniature he guards the water dish and wont' let Layla near it... everyone is just very upset.... suggestions please! :cry8:

ohhhh the cat!!
This is temporary right??
Let's see. OK,hmm I know nothing about cats!
Are you able to physically remove the cat when he is guarding the water bowl? What if you put out more than one bowl?
Or maybe you could just put him in another room during some play time with Layla? Sorry..not much help:confused:

did you just get the cat? maybe they just need an adjustment period. i don't know--i'm allergic to cats and never owned one so i don't know much about them and how to help them coexist with other animals. i hope things work out for you.

LOL that's a cat for you.

Mine is a big baby and runs away from morgan so i don't have a problem with him. However when i used to bring morgan to my ex's for the weekend she used to play with his cat. His cat would stalk morgan and pounce on her from behind the furniture. It was hilarious.

When you want play time with Layla just put the cat in another room. Also get another water dish. He can't guard two at the same time.

You might try getting a squirt bottle and squirting the cat whenever he picks on her? Or if you have a finished basement or something...let the cat live downstairs. Just make sure that he gets attention. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone. Yes the cat is just temporary but has been here for two weeks... Layla has done a complete circle it seems.. at first she was very insecure.. then she started to kinda like him and now we are back to not liking him and being scared. I will put two bowls out... the cat does have his own bowl in the basement but doesn't tend to use it at all. Our basement is not finished however i have no problem putting the cat down there (i'm sad to say i don't like the cat because of what he is doing to Lay, she comes first and he is not making her happy) however he can't stay down there ALL day when we are home can he?? i like the squirt bottle idea... i'll have to go get one this weekend. Thanks for the support guys...

I would try the squirt bottle first.

Then if that doesn't work put him downstairs. He can probably stay down there as long as he gets attention. Just give him a food bowl, water bowl, litterbox, and a bed would be nice too. :)

It took my cat that I've had for 9 years, six months to come back on the couch with me after Chip came along. Before that we had "couch time" every nite, but they both worked out an agreement on how to live together.

I'm a total cat person! I think if it ever came down to it, and if for some bizarro reason I was only allowed one kind of pet, it would be a cat.

My two cats leave Bitsy alone. Bitsy on the other hand loves to chase them and chew their ears. Bitsy is getting better in that she's chasing them less...

I think the cat you're watching might be bored and that's why he's stalking poor Layla. I would try the water bottle squirting everytime he stalks Layla. He'll come to associate stalking Layla with being squirted and hopefully he'll stop. I would also suggest you give the cat some stalking time with a toy for maybe 20 minutes a day. You can use a string, a teaser or a laser light. Maybe if he gets to stalk something other than Layla, he'll be less inclined to stalk her.

Good luck!

very good suggestions. i know it must be tough to see the cat pick on your baby, but i dont think he deserves to be stuck in a besment all by himself :( contrary to popular belief, cats are easily trainable if you know what you are doing. remember that this is all new for the poor cat and there will be an adjusting period. as long as you teach him what he is doing is wrong by squirting him and teach him what is right by dedicating some time to play with him with no dog, the cat should be fine. just like dogs, cats need love and attention too! :) my cat tommy gets mommy cuddle time every night.

good luck!

I think the squirt bottle idea. Can you maybe put the cat in the bathroom, or a bedroom some of the time, so your baby can have some free time with you?

JenniferBoyd 12-15-2007 11:50 AM

I have a yorkie, and used to have 2 cats until my husband became allergic. (the cats now live with my sister). Cats fight for dominance, so its totally normal for them to be the "bully". Over time the cat and dog will both learn their place in the hierarchy, and everyone will live happily together. Until then, I would help your pup by sitting close by with a water gun. When the cat acts too much like a bully, give a little squirt. I'm certainly no expert, but my fur babies acted the same way. It does get better. It may take a week or two, but it will work out. Good luck!

Awww. Poor Layla :( Wish I could offer some good advice other than what you've already gotten but sadly, I have nothing to offer but my sympathies. :( How much longer do you have the kitty?

browniesmom622 12-16-2007 07:34 AM
