My son will be 16 in December and it terrifies me! NJ is soooo over crowded on the roads and even after 30 years of driving I feel like I take my life in my hands every day! Of course, he can not wait to start. Not to mention car insurance for a 16 year old boy is about $4000 a year!

OH Teri just wait.. I remember sitting on the front porch crying to my girlfriend the first night my son drove away by himself. Of course my Husband thought I was nuts for being so emotional.

Tell me about it!!!!!! I am paying for 2 young males right now...at least I won't have to pay for this one until he gets his provisional.

Judging from Bonnie's expression she has another dislike to add the official likes/dislikes threads....not sure if it's getting up early, wearing a party hat, or her human brother stealing the limelight...maybe a combination of the three.

Driving in Virginia...to get a permit...15yrs 9 months. You can get a regular license at 16 but you have to had driving lessons. They used to offer them for FREE in school, but now charge for them. Or you can do the private lessons. There's usually a waiting list at the schools so many parents opt for the private lessons. A lot of kids here wait for whatever reason. Shoot, I had my mother at the dmv the second I could get mine ;)

He is eligible for his driver's permit today, but I'm a bad Mom and I haven't gone to the DMV to get the book so he can study for the test. I'll probably go get it today and he'll take the written test next week. Then before he is eligible for his Driver's License, he will have to take Driver's Ed, which here is done by private companies. I think the Tech college here has a class, but there is such a waiting list, we just do the private lessons! Oh Lord...can't believe he will be driving....watch out world

Check your online DMV. They have practice tests here on line, you might have them too :) :) :) When our oldest son turned 15, I gave him the DMV book and plastic baby keys with his gifts, I told him you pass, I'll turn the keys into some you can use. On his 16th, he woke up to a surpise in the driveway, a day I will never forget, my baby becoming a young man :) :) :)

No kidding! I remember telling my mom on my 16th BD, where is it? where is my car with a big red bow? She laughed!
Instead... I had to BUY a Jeep Comanche P/up off of my dad for 900.00! Yeah... teaching me responsibility.... whatever!

Me and you both!!! We actually had a hurricane hit on my 16th b'day (Hurricane Elouise  not sure if that is how you spell it but it is how you pronounce it!)so everything in town was closed. 2 days later I was driving my Dad crazy to take me down there so he did. Turns out he knew the person giving the driving tests and she told me that she would do it just for me, so I drove around the block and she said, "Go back...you passed" I couldn't believe, all those months of practicing how to parallel park, and all I had to do was drive around the block :yay_jump: :yay_jump: I was so happy!! My dad taught me how to drive by myself at 8 years old in the stadium parking lot, so I was more than ready to get out on the streets after 8 yrs of parking lots!!!

Have you ever heard Alan Jackson's song "Daddy let me drive" I love it it reminds me of my Dad!!

Wow! Reminds me of my dad! We used to wait at the end of our really long driveway for him to get home from work. Then he'd sit one of us on his lap and let us drive up to the garage.
Hey, what happened to the musical note smilies? Doesn't admin like the way we sing? :(

bchgirl 04-28-2006 06:52 AM

Parallel parking!!! Remember it well. When we were in driver's ed at school...part of your test was parallel parking between traffic cones...no knocking down the traffic cones  Any way the driver's ed cars had two brakes...driver's side and passenger side...(you know, in case the teacher HAD to stop some stupid maneuverer ya pulled on the street.) During the parallel test, they'd have two students in a vehicle and the teacher would be outside grading your parking job. My buddy in the passenger side worked the brake while I parallel parked. Can you say instant A. Thanks Jon :)

I never learned to parallel park until we lived in a historic district here....no driveways....I became a parallel parking pro. ;)
