As your knowledge is obviously greater than mine on this subject, would you be so kind as to give me an example of when "less is more".

I understand it is an expression used in USA but I have never understood it.

The definition of the word "less" is simple.

The dictionary defines it as :

"TO A SMALLER EXTENT OR AMOUNT OR NOT AS MUCH"

So you can see my confusion, if something is of a smaller amount then how can it be more than the amount.

Perhaps there is a language problem here but I really would appreciate an example as it would extend my education and I am not too old to learn. :)

I win just to imagine the look on Brian's face when he realizes that, once again, I have bested him. Initially, I imagined that look to be a friendly smirk -- like, en garde! As my wins piled up, I imagined the look to be more of a wry grin -- as in, ah, "this sob is starting to get to me, but I'll show him who is boss." Lately, though, I know the look is one of shear disappointment, crushing defeat, really. That vision is what allows me to sleep so comfortably at night.
