Is your child in a GATE program? If so what is your experience? I would like to know what kind of stress it adds on your child, if any? Do you think your child is happy participating in the program? |
What is that, my child is in an academically gifted program, AIG, is that the same thing?? |

oh ok, well he has dealt with the extra work pretty well and he sometimes gets teased by some of the other kids for being "smart" but I am extremely proud of him... sometimes I think I push him too hard but i just wish my parents would have pushed me harder when I was in school |

He is in fourth grade and he gets seperate math work than the other kids, it is supposed to be a little more challenging, they have a seperate program for math and reading, right now he is only in the math. I guess he gets the same amount of work as the other kids just more challenging |
It has been quite some time since my kids were that young, but my daughter was in the GATE program and I taught one of the classes ( a computer class) where we helped the kids makew a little school newsletter. They loved it! These kids were only in 2cnd grade. The GATE program is designed to give them some FUN and challenging stuff to do without any preasure. Most kids love the challenge and the no pressure type of work. Sonya |

My Son was in one. It was about 17 yrs ago so I am sure it has changed. All the extra work he did at school. It was a shame parents whose children were not in it complained then eventually they stopped offering it at his school |

We had the same thing happen at my son's school. Parents complained that their children weren't in it so therefore they stopped offering it because it "wasn't fair" for the other students. :rolleyes: However my son was in it last year and the year before and LOVED it. He did very well. |

When I worked at our local school, it was called TAG (talented and gifted). My sister's little girl has been in it since 1st grade...she is super smart and is so quick with math, etc. Our program was not only about different or extra work, but extra fun stuff as well. They have gone on learning trips and have done learning games. They only meet 1 hour per school week though. |
I was in a GATE program many many many moons ago and then honors programs off and on in jr high and high school. I think the most fun I had was at the grade school level. I loved it. My best memory was being able design and carry out my own scientific study. I got to research and design my own tests. Then go into different classes at the school and conduct testing to get my field research. It was a blast! The honors programs were more book work and expectations. A lot more pressure if you ask me. Then again it could have just been the schools I attended. My daughter is now in a gifted and talented program. Her strong points are math and sciences. She'd been getting extra studies the year before. It was very hit or miss though. She and about 4 others in her class got the extra studies only if there were teachers or volunteers available. Towards the end of the year they didn't get any of the extra time. Teachers were just too busy. This year she qualified to attend a school that had a GT program or stay at her old school and get the extra classes. We gave her the choice. She chose to attend the new school. It shocked the carp out of us. LOL We're very proud of her for going outside her comfort zone! She is LOVING the new school. I think that she enjoys the freedoms and challenges. I certainly don't hear that she's bored now. LoL I like that the students are allowed to express themselves in how they do things. Example is a book report. They pick any book they want. The report can be anything from acting out a part of the book, making a collage to doing a standard book report. My daughter hasn't told us of any teasing or stigma to her being in the program. The school only has one GT class per grade. The core studies are held in their GT classroom. Stuff like art, gym and music are held with the rest of their peers. We were worried about it. So far, so good. I could go on and on about the school and it's program. We're very pleased with how it's going. We did make sure she could go back to her old school if she found the new one too much for her. I don't think we'll have to worry about that now. :) |
Ivhana i love your post, thank you In my son's second grade class I was actually worried that my son had a learning disability or add. He had a horrendous teacher that gave him terribly low self esteem (loong story!). I was under the impression he was not at grade level and was struggling. With this year (3rd grade) his teacher thinks his problems were caused by the negativity from the TEACHER, not a learning disability. As he does not have ANY attention problems now and is very on task with everything and so willing to learn. His new teacher allows the kids to be very creative and my son went from being a very shy kid that felt bad about himself in school to a kid that just put on a hilarious puppet show for his whole class at his own volunteering! He is just really doing well now and coming out of his shell. His test results from 2nd grade came in last month and they were shocking to me because i assumed he was not learning at grade level. He tested advanced in everything. I got a call this morning that they want to put him into GATE. I am nervous because I don't want to do anything that might be too much pressure and turn him into that little boy that had no self esteem last year. |
