Any (human) doctors or medical people? I had a chest xray from my employee health department at the hospital that I work for because I had an allergic reaction to the TB skin test. Anyways, the xray showed that my lungs and heart were perfect, but it said I have an "elevated left hemidiaphragm". What is that? Should I be worried? How would it be treated? My mom made me get an appointment with her pulmonologist and I go in two weeks. I tried to do some research online and the only things I could find was in doctor language. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. |
I have no idea...the only thing I can think of is maybe the left side of your diaphragm is elevated for some reason??? I hope everything is okay |
It means that the left side of your diaphragm is paralzyed or partially paralyzed. You may have had it for some time or it could be something new. Have you been in an accident or had any kind of surgery on your chest? It could be perfectly normal for you, but it usually means that something is wrong. If you are not having any symptoms, like shortness of breath, then I wouldn't worry, but I would go to the doctor as soon as possible. You can also have stomach problems, because the diaphragm is pushing on the stomach. My husband had this after heart surgery. It caused him to be very short of breath and he was really sick. It resolved on its own in a few weeks. |

I have actually had a lot of shortness of breath... for years actually. First they said it was allergies, then allergies and asthma, then we are back to allergies. I also have had a lot of gastrointestional issues, but the doctors never really did anything about it. From what I read, it could around cause cardiac arrithymia, which I have and my doctor associated that with my caffiene intake. Somehow, I'm thinking that my doctor is a little nuts and that this is what's been wrong with me the whole time. So your husbands resolved on his own? That's great! I don't think I've had any accidents or surgeries on my chest, but I've had plenty of accidents. Maybe when I was hit by the drunk driver? Or maybe my bike accident... I don't remember anything that happened with that (I had a severe concussion and went into shock). I also have scoliosis. My husband mentioned that maybe my spine alignment could have done something. I don't know! I wish my appointment was sooner. I'm really nervous and can't quit thinking about it. |
Don't stress out about it. It sounds like you may have had this for some time, because some of the symptoms you have could well be associated with it. That likely means though, that it is not some horrible disease causing it - since you've likely had it for a while. I think you may well find out the root problem for some of these symptoms you have had, and hopefuly, there will be a way to solve it, and if they can fix it, then at least you will know. Please please don't stress out over it till you see the doctor, there isn't any need to. You've probably had this a long time, so waiting a while longer to see a doctor will be OK. Yes, my husband's diaphragm issue resolved on its own - but I have another friend who got a paralyzed diaphragm from surgery also, and her's didn't resolve, she still has it. My husband's doc and her doc too, said they almost always resolve by themselves, but sometimes they don't. It sounds like you have been doing OK, even though it was there (and you didn't know it) - so I bet you will be OK, now that you know you have it. When it your appointment? |

I know its hard not to worry, and I know you will, but just don't stress out about it. I have a feeling that something may be wrong, but not something terrible. I think you have probably had it for awhile and since you are doing fine, then I think it will be OK. Your chest x-ray showed your heart and lungs were normal, so...... just look forward to finding out what the heck is going on with your diaphragm, if anything, just don't stress to the max because I don't think it is necessary! Good luck, and be sure to let us know what you find out. I will be checking on Nov. 2nd to see what you found out. |
