They had a thing on about Ellen Mutts and Moms and Puppy Mills,

It looked to me like they are trying to help MRS Mutts and Moms?
I was not that impressed

what are your thoughts?

I didn't get that at all.

I thought it was good that they discussed puppy mills (and they were saying that was one of the reasons was so passionate about animals).

Incidentally, the rescue that they interviewed (Main Line Rescue) rejected my application when I tried to adopt a puppy from them. :rolleyes: :)

I understand that rescue groups need to really screen people to make sure that they find great homes for the dogs but I would really like to find out the screening process that most use..
I really think they make it harder to get a dog than a human baby...

ALL rescues are very different. Most shelters just require a license and the adoption fee. However most rescues have some sort of screening process from very lenient to very strict, so I can't tell you what most use.. since it is very varied but I can tell you what I use.

I haven't fostered in awhile but when I did, it was mostly dogs that would grow up to be larger dogs.

i would post them on petfinder then when the emails came in I would take a good look at the email and what they said in it. If I liked what they said and they truly seemed interested in the dog, I would email them back and send them an application. Even if I didn't feel they would be a good fit I would email them and let them know, and know why. For example I got one kid who was still in college and living in the dorms, another that had a pit bull pup the same age and sex as the pit mix I was adopting out (pits generally don't do well with same sex dogs), they wanted a dog to live in the backyard, etc.

My app has many questions like where will the dog stay when you are at work? How many hrs a day is the dog left alone? What kind of training methods do you plan on using? Do you have any other pets? If so, what kind? Have any of your pets died in the past 10 yrs? if so, why? Have you given any of your pets away? If so, why? Under what circumstances would you give this dog away.

Reasons I would turn the person down after an application-
* they have given a dog away
* they expect the dog to stay outside when they are gone
* they will be gone for a ridiculous amount of hours at a time
* they have other pets I know my foster dog would not get along with

among others.

If I like the application I will call their vet and make sure their other animals are UTD on at least rabies and heartworm pills. If I like the application I will have a home check done. I'm not super picky about home checks, its just to make sure the person is really like they say they are. I usually take the dog with me at that point and if all goes well and they are ready for the dog, I leave it with them.

While I understand WHY they did it, I think that they went about it the wrong way and got a lot of bad press for rescues.

My contract states that if the new owner ever needs to rehome their dog I am to be contacted. If they had another home for it, I would probably just talk with them and make sure they felt the home was good for the dog and let them know I have room for the dog at my house if need be. Of course all my fosters have been in their new homes over a year now. If it was someone who had recently adopted the pup from me I would have the new people apply and then do a home check. I'm not nearly as picky as M&M. I don't have an age limit for kids or anything.
