What happened to.... the thread with the photo of the large woman whose belly button was exposed? I just wanted to kindly respond to the person who thought "fat" was a derogatory term. Most large people use the word "fat" just like thin people use the word "thin," or "tall," or "brunette," or whatever adjective that applies. Society despises fat people and they are the only group I can think of that it is "okay" to make fun of and discriminate against. Those of us with a weight problem get hurt everyday by a "well meaning" friend or relative, or sometimes a stranger who takes it upon himself/herself to point out to us that we are fat. Though I am not as large as that poor woman in the picture, I certainly feel her pain. I'm not trying to "start" something, I just wanted to clear that up! Love you all! Elizabeth |
I didn't see it either. I guess it got deleted. I thought it was inappropriate and since the woman didn't know she was having her picture taken is really bad. |
I had also thought that the picture was digitally altered. They can do amazing things now with photos. It's still tacky. |
Not everyone thinks that way elizabeth. It is the same for all who are made fun of, and that is how I teach my children. It is not OK. They were correct for deleting it. I have a large friend, her best friend sent this and many other pictures and jokes like this to her. She refused to ask her to stop, but I know how much it hurt her for her friend to do this. |

You are absolutely right. Growing up, I was horribly made fun of until high school because I am half Asian and half Caucasian. My favorite question was always, "what are you mixed with?" As if I were some type of cocktail drink! Looking back on it now, those cruel people and people that asked those questions were ignorant. I would not change who I am today and actually with those awful people, I kinda thank. They've made me a stronger person. Also, I love how every Asian is Chinese. What ignorant people don't realize is there are many different Asian countries with different Asian people. Not everyone is Chinese. Just ignorance. Also, it's Oriental food and Asian people. Loved the term Oriental people. Whatever :rolleyes: |

I always wonder what such insensitive people think is wrong with the eyesight of the person they are referring to. Maybe they think the person doesn't have a mirror. Or maybe they think their eyesight is really, really bad. Surely they do not think it is news to the person who is being demeaned. I remember a comedian who did an act and acted as if he just discovered he was black after it had been pointed out to him. I think we reserve the right to poke fun at ourselves but that does not give another the right to do that to us..JMHO |
not wanting to offend anyone, but i too dislike it when people automatically think i'm Mexican because i look hispanic and start talking to me in spanish.. and get mad when i tell them i don't understand them lol... or when they find out I'm filipino.. they say no im chinese.. :confused: |
That is so silly! I tan easily and have brown hair. In the summer I get a lot of people speaking spanish to me. Then they want to know if I am indian, the truth is, I don't know what I am, a mutt i guess! But I used to work with a lot of Japanese guys. People would say they speak english, just pretended they didn't understand you. It was the most rediculous thing I ever heard. I worked closely with them, and they wanted to understand, just common language was unfamiliar to them and difficult. PEOPLE! :rolleyes: |
My daughter can look fairly "exotic" for lack of a better word. She's only 18, but over the years she's been called Italian, Spanish, Amercian Indian, among others. And the strange thing is I am blond with blue eyes! She got her looks from her dad but he doesn't have that cross-over thing goin' on. My daughter would always get frustrated cause people would think she was from another country. But I always told her that it's very cool to look like that. She's very beautiful, IMHO, lol. I grew up in a fairly prejudiced family. But I think I have managed to make some of them realize that we're all God's creations and turned out exactly how He intended us to. We should respect that, big or small or whatever color. |
Thanks to everyone who posted about Oriental being used for inanimate objects only! I try to gently correct people about it (like my grandmother, for one) and tell them its offensive, but they don't get it. It *really* pisses me off when people use oriental or assume an Asian American is automatically Chinese AND I'M NOT EVEN ASIAN! :) |
I have an unenlightened friend who uses the term "Jewed somone down." She wouldn't intentionally hurt a fly, but she doesn't get that its offensive! |
My Aunt was fired from a government job a few years ago for referring to someone as a Jap. My grandparents were not racist, they were the kindest people in the world (god rest their souls), but they would not let go of certain unacceptable words. When I had my kids, I would say firmly "NOT IN FRONT OF THE KIDS!" This is a new world and we can all get along. I just hope this generation will make as much progress as we. |
