Really Stressing Ok I'm a sophomore (in HS). Of course the PSAT is for juniors. But they picked the top 5 sophomores to take it with them (yes I'm one of them:D ). It doesnt count for anything to us (us being spohomores) but I'm still really stressed. I wasnt nervous at all when they told us and gave us all the info for it, but I have to take it Wednesday  and now it's setting in. I dont even know why I'm worried, b/c it doesnt really count for us, but I am :( . They gave us a practice test, and I'm pretty sure I'm good on most of the info, but it's timed and I do HORRIBLE on timed tests. And also, in the top 5 sophomores, im #5 so I'm pretty sure everyone's gonna do better than me :( |
Chelsea, try not to worry too much. Being in the top 5 - whether 1 or 5 is impressive. Just do your best and at least you'll know what to expect for next year. But, we know you'll do great!!!! |
That is great that you are in the top 5.Try not to stress and look at it as an opportunity to learn how to ace it next year!! |
Take a deep breath! You will do a great job. I just know it. :) The great thing about taking it this year is that you are one step ahead of everyone else for next year. Study the test carefully and study the results. But don't worry. Just think your way through it. You can do this! :D Get a good night's sleep the night before and eat a high protein/low sugar breakfast. You go girl! :D |
thanks for the replies everyone. you have all made me feel a little better :) I think I'll do good. I just always get scared before things like this. But this is the worst b/c it'll be the biggest test I've taken so far. |
You'll do fine.. I'm a sophmore too and am taking the PSATs on wednesday.. except its all sophmores and juniors. Good luck! Remember its just a practice exam! |
When I was in High School I took the PSAT every year, starting my Freshman year. FYI the more you take the a PSAT or SAT, the higher your score will go. Plus, you get to send in your highest SAT scores to any college, they don't see all of them. So it doesn't even matter! My first PSAT as a freshman was 860. My final SAT score that was sent out to all the colleges I applied for was a 1280. Trust me, take it as MANY times as you can because you will get better each time!! Also, just so you know, for every question you get wrong, you get -.25 of a point. But, if you leave it blank, it is just zero, they don't take anything away.... so if you have no clue of the answer, leave it blank, don't guess!! But if you can narrow it down to just 2 answer options, go ahead and make a guess!! I should be an SAT tutor, I know too much stuff about it and its worthless to me now!! lol |
You are going to be great! You wouldn't have been asked if you weren't ready and you've proven that to yourself with the practice material. Just relax and do your thing! You should be so proud!:) |
Hi Chelsea - first congrats on being chosen to take this test. Let me tell you....my son went to a very preppy school here and the school he attended had the sophomores take the test (all of them) even though it didn't count. Let me tell you that was the best thing they could have done because the more you take it - the more prepared you are and the nerves go away each time you take it. This is such an honor for you Chelsea so take the PSATs as many times as you can. It paid off for my son - he's now an electrical engineer at a very prestigious government contractor in New York State. ;) Oh - remember the higher the scores you get - the more scholarships and grants you will get when you apply to colleges. ;) |
lol thanks everybody. I have calmed down a little :) I think I was more nervous yesterday than I am today. Thanks for the support everyone. I'll let you all know how it goes :) |
Have faith in yourself. If they didn't think you could do well they wouldn't have picked you. Best wishes. |
please don't stress!!! I did ok when I was a sophmore.. We (AVID class) studied the SAT for 2 month prior to taking it and I got a 1400 then the next year I forgot all about it and took it without worrying and not carrying what I got because my last time was higher then 80% of the rest of the school... I ended up getting 1600.... it was so easy and I thought evrything proablly was wrong because I didn't really care... JUST DON"T STRESS!!! just study but don't make it so important. It's your sophmore year! get use to how the test is now and next time it will come natural... Either way... GOOD LUCK!!! |
Glad things are better. My daughter started taking the ACT and SAT every year when she was in 7th grade. She almost had a perfect score by her Junior year - (35 out of 36 on ACT) You need to look at this as a great opportunity to practice - that's what this is. Tests prove that the more often you take the test, the better you do. So this is a wonderful opportunity for you. You should visit www.collegeboard.com and sign up for the question of the day. They will email it to you everyday - it's great practice for when it will really count. We are still on the email list, even though my daughter started college this year at one of the top universities in the country. I try to do the problems now - and see how smart I am! A co-worker and her daughter both get the emails everyday & then talk about how they each did! Good luck tomorrow :) - you'll do great & be ready for the real deal next year, when you are eligible for thousands of dollars in scholarships - my daughter got a $3,000 scholarship based off how well she did on the psat her junior year, it was a big help! |
How did it go today? I was thinking about you. :) |

Well I know I did good on the math section. Math has always been my best subject. And I'm pretty sure I did pretty good on the Writing section as well. But the critical reading, not so good. I practiced on that one the most b/c I knew it was going to be the worst, but its just something I'm not great at. Oh well, I did my best and I'm proud of myself. Haha I'll be even more nervous on the day we get our scores back   |
