Donating Blood At my job we have NY Blood Center come in 4x a year for people to donate blood. I've donated all 4x. Now here's the question.... have you every donated Platelets? Is the process the same? I know it takes 2 hours, but does it hurt? What can I expect? They are having a Platelet Drive here at work on 11/1 and I've considered it very much, as I lost my grandmother to Breast Cancer and would love to be able to help others in need. I'm alittle freaked out, how I've read that after the blood is seperated, you get your blood back. Thank you!! |
I have never donated platelets, but my dad did for his mother who had cancer. From my under standing is that the blood goes through a machine that strips the platelets out. A high in calcium solution is added to the blood before it goes back into you. Dad said that the blood goes out one arm and in the other. He said that it hurt no different then just getting the IV started. He said the only thing that got him was that it made him real cold. My dad said that it was very cold and they gave him blankets that had been warmed because his lips were turning blue. He drank hot cocoa and ate hot soup for dinner to help warm back up!!My dad said that it was an experience that he will not ever forget, because he was able to help his mother. |
Wow I admire you for doing it.. I freak out with needles.. I have to get a shot on Wednesday and I'm already freaking out! |
It takes 2 hours?!? I admire you for doing that too! I can't cause i would faint! I want to donate blood also but i really get light headed and freak out, start shivering. Just the other day i got a shot and i fainted, i had to lay down with my feet up and i started to shiver and i was very cold. I hate when that happens. |
