Question about Birth Control
 
My doctor just prescribed birth control pills for me we are hoping that it will help me out with my periods I have endometriosis(sp?) my periods have become unbearable. It has been more than 10 years since I have been on them and Im totally lost I thought you were supposed to take them after your period but it says you can take them on the first day of your period or on the first sunday after you start even if you are still bleeding. Is one way better than the other?
Also my doctor told me I could use them the traditional way take them and have a period every month or take them continuously for 3 months then have a period anyone have experience with only have a period every 3 months?

I think the only difference in when you start them... beginning on Sunday is easier to keep track of what day you actually started taking them and thus when you would take the placebos...it would begin on a Sunday also.

I wasn't told anything about taking them continually...as I was given information to regulate the periods...but I think in your case...having no periods for 3 months would help with your endrometriosis...simply because it stops them during that time.

I'm on Seasonale and only have four periods a year (one every 3 months). It's been GREAT! I'm very regular - start on a Tuesday every time and my periods are very light and last 4-5 days. No cramps (although I never had cramps), light bleeding..it's great. When I first started using them I did have some breakthrough spotting in between periods which I was told is common at first. But I never have breakthrough bleeding anymore. Also, I start my series of pills on sundays which is how the pills are set up to take (labeled by day) so you might get confused if you start on a different day.

I have been on the depoprovera shot for over 3 years, which means it has been over 3 years since I've had a period! :cheer: I get a shot every three months, and it costs me about 75 dollars each time, so really, it is less expensive than the pill. I can't ever remember to take them anyway, so this works well for me! Disclaimer: it doesn't work out well for everyone, and when I first went on the shot it took about three months before the breakthrough bleeding stopped. But I lost a lot of weight when I first started taking it, mainly because I stopped taking the pill. Just my 2 cents! Your doctor knows what is best!

Like bchgirl said the only reason I think that they have different options to start is to make easier for you to know when you started. Also there is no harm in not getting your period for three months at time or at all. Or at least that is what my doctor has told me as well as my own research. Personally, I am on Yaz and take it continuously so I never get a period. I have PCOD (have been on BC for 13 years for this) and this helps me not have any painful periods becuase the cramping when I did have it was debilitating and extremely painful. I started that two years ago. At first I would still get breakthrough bleeding for the first year or so about every three months, which my doctor recommended just stop taking the pills when that happened so nature could run its course. I think its now been about year since I have had it at all. Also I do still encounter phantom cramps and such every couple months.

Hope this helps. Personally I love not having my period...one less thing to worry about! And definitley no mood swings too!

AMEN! I have thought a few times about going off BC, and then just thought, I don't even know what I would do if I had a period again! Tampons? I haven't bought those in years!

I second the depoprovera. I starting taking that after my last surgery for endo and it worked better than the birth control pills every did. Plus birth control pills make me very sick to my stomach. The depo worked great for me.

PM if you want to talk about endo. I have had it since I was 13 and I've been researching it ever since.

aww i miss depo in the sence that i wouldnt get my period i was on it a year and a half but the doctor said my calcium was getting low and i gained 60 pounds on it so he switched me to pills and im on yasmin and have lost most of the weight!!!!!

i take Marvelon 28 and i dont' religiously miss my period but many months i'll just skip the "placebo" pill and thus skip my period... usually if we are going away or i'm super busy at school or soemthing.. it is GREAT!

oh really!!! so if i just skip the placebo and start on the new pack i dont get my period!!!!! i just might try that

I heard from my doctor thats not a good thing to do... u might wanna make sure! but i could be wrong

yuppers. I asked my doctor she said it was fine and was acutally more how nature intended our bodies to be. before we started having only 1 or 2 kids, people were usually pregnant every year or two.. and breastfeeding, so really only had a few periods.... i usualy don't do it for more than two months at a time because then when i DO get my period my cramps tend to be worse. but ask YOUR doctor what he/she thinks

I was on othrotricyclen for yrs after i had my fist son and then i went off to get preggo with my baby who is now 2 about a yr ago my doctor switched me to yasmin because my periods were SOOOOO HEAVY and thought a steady dose of hormones was better than the tri phasic ones. It worked great for about 4 months really light periods for only 4 days but once again i am having terrible periods so much so that i won't leave my house the week of my period for fear that i will leak lol(sorry) i have an appt on Wed for my papsmear and i am terrified they will find something wrong. I just can't believe that my periods can be so heavy and horrible for a week and not be something wrong:( I am a sunday starter not only does is help remind me but it also helps stop my period because i stop my pills on sat start my period (sed to be every thursday after )But isnow anytime from thus-sat and i start my new pack of pills on sun it slows the flow and i'm all good again lol.

Yes, Depo can be very bad for you! I was on it for 2 years and oh my! I was a raving ....well...you get the picture. I also gained a lot of weight from it too...not good!

Yes you are exactly right, it is actually good to have fewer periods. In the past it was thought to be bad for the body but now thanks to doctors who actually care enough about women's health to do research, they have found that it is fine. And its true that our bodies are not meant to have so many periods. Having a period every month actually causes damage to our bodies. Ask your doctor and read the research.
