Please list things you know you can cut out to save $ This thread is an off shoot to the thread of how to get out of debt. I hope everyone can post one suggestion that they have that a person wanting to save money can use. It will be a nice eye opener for everyone if you ask me. |
My first suggestion would be to borrow books from the library. I get the newest hottest titles by actually putting the book on reserve. You can reserve a title from up to a month before it's released. I usually do this and get the book very close after it's released. I am an avid reader and read probably 5 books a week (hardcover) so after adding what I was spending and then donating it to the library I was shocked at my spending. So now I borrow and I try to donate a little something to the library at the end of the year for helping me with my reading obsession. |
Here's the big one I cut out :) Dunkin Donuts Coffee stops in the morning. I bought a to go cup and make my own coffee |
Well living in NY one thing that I always do is think before I drive. Gas at the price it is - I do my shopping once a week and kinda map it out so im not going around in circles wasting gas. Cooking yourself is also a BIG money saver and it'll be healthier for you too! |
Keep them coming guys...lots of good tips out there that will help us all. |
Buy jugs of water and fill a bottle or use a filter instead of buying bottled. Only buy half as many Yorkie clothes as you normally due.;) Use cheaper DSL instead of cable internet. |
Dont buy snacks at the gas station!! Gosh..those get me EVERY time! |
i know this isnt everyone but I save money by grooming my yorkies myself, nails, baths, teeth everything. no im not a professional but i think i have done great so far. also i boil my water so this saves money on buying water. I also dont buy an excessive amount of dog clothes or treats. I buy like 2 packs of treats and i wait till those are gone and then buy more. Also i dont buy tons of dog clothes just the ones that are super cute! things that get me are going out to eat i could save tons of money on! also starbucks, donuts, and bahama bucks sno cones. this gets me! my cell phone and text messaging, i pay like almost 80 a month on cell phone! |

I went from buying water bottles to the filter. The filter definitely is costly but saves some good $. Recently because they didn't have my filter in stock I just started drinking good old fashioned tap water. I haven't died yet (as I have told my kids :D) so I think I will keep going with the cheap old tap water. :D |
Rent DVD's from your library-ours has TONS of new releases and they're FREE! And, you get to keep them for 3 weeks, can renew them for free, and even if they're late it's only 15 cents per day! Can't beat that! Buy meat like chicken in bigger packages. Bring it home, and clean it, then cut it up into portions and cuts you can use...for example, I buy a package of 10 chicken breasts-I will freeze them in packages of two, and cut some of them into 1" cubes to use in stir fry. That way, I can just take out what I need to defrost, and I save money. Buy pop (soda, or "coke" for you Texans :) ) in 2 liter bottles. It will save you a TON of money! |

hahaha yeah they are cokes here! no matter what kind it is! |
cut your own grass and reuse the clippings as fertilizer.. use coupons from sundays paper . DONT CARRY MORE THAN $20 in CASH... thats it .. if you dont have it you WONT USE IT. |
Coupons! 1.Clipping coupons, if you aren't all ready. Not just for groceries, but for restaurants and other services too. Buying what is on sale that you need, and avoiding the "want". 2.If you belong to a warehouse club, buying in bulk (meats, fish, beverages, etc). You can freeze meats, and fish for later use. Great if they have a gas station too, here its usually 10 cents less than regular gas stations. 3. For online stuff I'm like a fiend trying to find the cheapest price, or if I can get some sort of reward for shopping at that site (mypoints, igive, etc). 4. Cut down on the magazine subscriptions, most of them you can read online anyway. 5. Clothing, only get one or two "trendy" pieces a season. Build your wardrobe with basic/classic pieces that you will get alot more use out of in the long run. 6. The "latte factor", lets say a pound of coffee at Starbucks is oh..$10.00. $10.00 would only get you maybe 3 cups of coffee at the counter, but could make proabably 5 times that at home. 7. Most importantly - set a budget! |
Shop at the dollar store , they have some really cute stuff in the ones around here, I even bought my holloween candy from there, a 5# bad for 2 dollars, I get alot of my cleaning supplies from there to;) |
I need to stop buying $40 dresses everytime I go to the dog boutique, which is every Sat. I could also stop visiting NYC weekly and try to go every other month. I do not need every perfume in Nordstrom and every accessory in Coach! I have already stopped eating out and bought a filter for the fridge and the faucet:) GO ME!! |
