Any Members That Are A Child Life Specialist (Also Know As A Play Therapist)?? I am going back to college this January and I am really leaning towards majoring in Child Family Development, specilizing in the Child Life Specialist field. I know that it is only a very small group that are currently employed with this career, but was wondering any YT members work in this field? I would love to hear your opinion of working as a CLS and just how difficult it is to find a position (which I have heard is a pretty big accomplishment since there aren't that many openings.). Thanks! Tammy |
My daughter has her own center with 8 employees. She finds it to be a very rewarding job, and as you say they're a very limited amount of specialist. From what she tells me they are in high demand, but good ones are not always easy to come by. It took her a long time to pick her staff, but is pretty happy with the ones she has. |
Rainbow Babies and Children"s Hospital in Cleveland Ohio has Child life specialist and I have nothing but great words for the ones We had the pleaser of knowing while 3 of my kids were hospitalized. I was so impressed that I looked into it myself. If you do venter into it maybe you could check to see if their is a children's hospital nearby that staff them.Good luck! |
Thank you both so much for your advice! I do know that our local hospitals have Child Life Specilaists, but since there are only a small few, that doesn't leave a lot of room for employment. I have been told that if you really have the desire to get into this field then you have to be willing to relocate. I am just not sure if I am willing to do this. I truly respect this idustry and know that I could be an assest with what I have experienced with the death of my first baby, but I am not 100% sure what I will do at this point. |
You can try talking with local psychologist and psychiatrist to see if there is a need in your area. Who knows you may land up starting your own place, and renting out space from one of the above. |

My cousin was a Child Life Specialist but she work with children who were terminally ill. She loved what she did but found it very difficult every time she lost a child. She now works at an Autism Centre. |
Hi Tammy, I don't have my degree in this but I did get my Bachelor's in Psychology and then I got my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy/Counseling. I don't know much about the degree your asking about but since it is a related field I wanted to let you know to check out licensure requirements. I'm not sure if you would even need a license but in my area it really helps when looking for a job. Good Luck to you. :) |
