Interior painting experience, anyone? Hi Guys, I'm planning on painting my hallway in the next few days. The white has become very faded and dull. But i had a few questions I was hoping some experienced painters could answer! The hallway is already painted with a semi-gloss paint. 1. Must I sand the semi-gloss paint off?? If I really do need to sand it off, any recommendations? I do have an automatic sander. But what about the trim areas or the hard to sand areas? Maybe instead of sanding off the old paint, i can just throw on some primer? 2. Do I really need to use primer before I paint? There are no cracks, uneven surfaces in my hallway. The new color I am painting the hallway with is pretty much the same white color, just brighter. Thanks so much! Peggy |
When I painted, it was a flat paint that I was painting over. So I just sanded it a little bit, where it was a rough texture. Then I paint a semi-gloss over it. I use Benjamin Moore, its great. I still had to do 2 coats because the 1st got absorbed by the wall. Good luck. |
My sil is a painter and no you don't have to sand unless you have holes that need filling in with compound. The primary reason to use primer is when you have new never painted walls and when you are changing from one color to another like dark to light. I use to change my wall colors every 2 year. Now having him in the family I just might do it every year.:D |
I have always painted my own home on the interior. My advice would be to sand the surface a bit. You don't have to totally sand down the previous paint but just go over it and make sure it's nice and smooth. There are always little nicks or bumps in the surface and this should homefully get rid of them. I have painted over another color without using a primer but I usually find you have to do less coats if you do use a primer. |
I do all my own painting, and love it! Yes, you'lll need a primer, I recommend the Kilz stuff. It works great and it's available at Walmart. Sanding isn't really necessary unless it's a HIGH gloss enamel. BTW, I recommend Eggshell finish, it's got the nice matte appearance of Flat, with the wear of a semi-gloss;) Have FUN:D!!! |
