My son's *th grade school Survey My oldest son Mason cam home from his 8th grade school and told me that they did a drug/alcohol survey in school. He said that he was really bothered by how they were to answer some Questions. He said that they asked if you ever tried alcohol any kind even if it was a sip so he raised his hand and asked if they wanted you to mark yes for when you take communion at church and the guy said to mark yes. so He marked it down and then they asked to put down your age that you had tried it first and my son got ticked off because he was in 2nd grade when he made his first communion!! This is for a national survey and they post ages of children start drinking!! I agreed with my son that this was very misleading.I told him and his brothers that for now on if they are given a survey about drinking alcohol then they can ignore that they want you to put down for communion and just go with what age you are when you actually do "sneak a drink" ( that is to say if they ever do.) My Boy's are not "drinkers" just because they are catholic and start getting wine at communion!! Sorry to rant but i was kind of upset that they tell these kids that they are Drinking at age 8 for taking communion!! |
Geeze!  Wonder if they consider cough syrup as alcohol to hahaha. that is ridiculous! |
I hate those surveys. I always instructed my children to refrain from participating. |
I too had this dilemna or a similar one when I was in grade school and the DARE program was all the rage...The particular DARE officer told me that I should let him know if any adult had tried to give me alcohol or drugs... naturally I ratted out my priest ;) ...Needless to say I got really worried that I was doing something wrong...Needless to say the DARE officer got a stern talking to about dealing with the folks with different religious beliefs, and my parents had a similar talk with me that you did with your sons...These sorts of things are ridiculous. |
That is just absolutely ridiculous!! They are not painting an accurate picture there. No wonder those survey results are always so alarming... |
i got those survey's once a year from like 8-12th grade. some other questions that i remeber are "do you feel safe in school" " but it was mostly about drugs and drinking. i always thought there were pointless. A few weeks before the survery was going to be handed out everyone got a letter mailed home that said there was going to be a survery passed out and if you did not want your child to partake in the survery then the parent could sign the bottom and send it back to school. I would look into this, maybe call the school and ask if there is something like this for your boys. One time i did not feel like doing the suvery, its the same questions everytime and i got a lecture about not doing it. |
That's ridiculous. I can't believe they were so bias. |

How ridiculous. Both of my kids go to a Private Catholic school and both had first communion in 2nd grade, so they have also been drinking since they were in 2nd grade! Hope that helps the National Survey getthe #'s lower making our parenting skills look like TRASH! I mean seriously what good is a survey that is a misleading LIE?? I don't blame you for being upset thats just plain ignorant on thier part. IMO. |
yeah i remember those questions in 8th grade.. it got really personal.. like questions on what u think about ur appearance.. to any thoughts of suicide at all and if so how many times?? it was like  |
I know this is off topic but along the same lines....My daughters 7th grade assignment at a private Catholic Elementary School was to write her own obituary...I said He** NO. I know it is used in many classes to write what you see your life like and how you would want to be seen....So why not title it "My Life" and write how you see your life...not my OBITUARY!! Too morbid for me and I refused to let her participate. I asked the teacher to give her a special assignment or report to do or just flunk her, I didnt care but she WAS NOT writing her own death notice....Not at 11 years old. Nope Nope Nope |

I called and asked the Principal about the alcohol and drug survey and he said that he was not aware that they had the children include church beliefs and practices and he said that Yes it would be misleading seeing children as young as second grade were drinking! He is Catholic himself and said that he was going to check more into it now that it was brought to his attention. I told him I did not want to make a big deal but gees my kids getting communion every Sunday does not mean that they are doomed to become alcoholics because they were drinking communion wine at an early age! |
I remember when my daughter was in 1st grade at my school (she's 24 now) ....her teacher was talking to the class about just say no to drugs and alcohol....she was telling talking to the students about drinking and driving and my dear sweet daughter raised her hand (I was in the classroom at the time) and told her teacher how her mommy drinks and drives every morning....   Of course she didn't happen to mention that it was just coffee :animal36 |

I had to take the same test when I was in 12th grade. My friends was mad also and just started to mark anything. Some even marked the 'wrong' answers (you know the saying yes I did this or that even if they didn't)... I didn't really care because I didn't drink anything or did anything that was illegal or was 'bad'... but some people do take those type of things to heart |
