You will not believe what hubby brought home yesterday!! So, my husband went running yesterday morning and came home with a guinea pig!!! Someone had left Sam(yes, we named him/her) at the lake where hubby runs, in a shoe box! David felt so bad for Sam that he brought him/her home. We are keeping Sam in the garage, b/c I don't want to bring him/her in if there is something wrong, which I am imaging there might be. We are not keeping Sam and just trying to find a good home for him/her. Can you believe someone would just leave this poor animal out! Any advice on how to care for Sam in the meantime?? |
Oh, poor thing! That was very sweet of your husband. Some people are so cruel. Try googling 'guinea pig' and I'm sure that you can get some useful info. |

Awww I had a guinea pig when I was kid. Her name was Jelly. They are sweethearts. I hope she checks out just fine at the vets and you are able to find a good home for her. What a sweet hubby you have for bringing her home. :) |
Awww, he's sweet! He will need a water bottle to drink from, and they sell pellets for them at any store, Walmart, Meijer...or Pet Supply store. They also love veggies! Carrots, lettuce, celery..... I can't beleive someone would just leave him! :thumbdown You have a wonderful husband! |

If you decide to keep it, I can give you a good site to go to! In the meantime, in addition to what you're already doing for it....HAY!!! Timothy (preferrably) or alfalfa. You can buy it in bags for small pets. They love it more than anything, and it's great for them! Bless you for trying to help the fella! Guinea pigs are really throw away pets :(....people think they're so cute, and then find out that it can be a LOT of work to keep their cages clean, etc. Do you know there are actually whole SHELTERS dedicated to guinea pigs?! Look guinea pigs up on Petfinder for your area, and that may help you locate a GP rescue near you.... good luck! |

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. We have contacted a local rescue and are waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, we are still going to keep the vet appt tomorrow and hope that everything checks out ok. This is just so sad that people throw these little guys away!! :( |
You can feed it handfuls of fresh grass from your yard too....or let it out to nibble in a pen, or overturned cage. (never unsupervised, of course, and only if there have been no chemicals sprayed on the grass!) They're sweet pets, in a very quiet kind of way. Like all pets, I guess, the more attention and effort you put into them, the more rewarding they are. |
If you decide not to keep Sam and he/she is healthy you can look into donating him to a classroom at a local elementary school or preschool. I have had many small animals in my classroom in the past and most kids are so curious and very gentle with the class pet. Your husband is a very kind soul to have rescued Sam. |
In a shoe box ? That poor baby. Im so glad your hubby brought him/her home. Glad you are taking care of it until it gets a good home. My Hubby brings home every animal he finds. lol |
Thank you all so much! Sam went to the vet this am and he's healthy except for a skin infection. I posted an updated thread! :) |
That is so nice of you to take sam in and help him.....how rude to just leave him there...the nerve of some people!! How could you go to bed at night knowing you did that?? Uggg Id haunt myself and be guilt ridden FOREVER. I hope Karma bites who did this in the ACE! |
