Golden Girl - World's Best This is crazy but I am so proud of a 15-year old girl I have never met! But she's from the Des Moines-area and any American should be proud of her. Shawn Johnson - a gymnast won Gold yesterday at the World championship in all-around. The meet is being held in Germany & earlier this week Shawn led the USA team to gold - over the Chinese I believe by almost a point! Tomorrow she goes on to compete in some individual events. This girl won gold at the Pam Am games this summer and then the US Championship in California a couple weeks ago. This is huge - May Lou Retton, Cathy Rigby & Dominque Dawes never earned the World's best title in all-around & Shawn has trained almost exclusively right here at home! If you want to read about her & see her photo gallery here's a link http://www.desmoinesregister.com/app...64/1003&lead=1 |
Very impressive. I'm sure we'll be hearing that name a lot in the next several years!! |
Awe....I went to school in Des Moines for the years 2004-2006, and I saw a program on TV about her on one of the local channels, and she really is amazing. And you're right, she trained in Des Moines, I believe almost entirely. I'm an ex-gymnast, so if you don't know gymnastics, that is FAR from the norm. If a girl is an elite gymnast, she is usually "shipped" off to a top-notch training center somewhere around the US, so that's really saying something! And that girl is soooooooo down to earth too...she just acts so sweet in interviews and just really can't seem to believe what she's doing! She's amazing  |
Where did you go to school LuvMyPrinceKobi? Yes, I think her parents have done an excellent job raising her - she is so humble, and she has a good coach here. She has spent some time in the summers with tthe Karolyi coaches. The dedication this young lady has is amazing! And she finally gets to start high school next week when she comes home - she'll be about 2 wks behind, but I'm sure she will catch up fast. |
I went to AIB (College of Business). It's VERY small, but if you live in Des Moines, I'm sure you've heard the annoying commercials..lol. I went there for court reporting and then moved to Charleston in August when I graduated...sorry to go OT...just wanted to answer your question... |
yep, I know of AIB - helping lots of people get good jobs with court reporting and now with a program to do - oh, I don't know what to call it simulcasting for the deaf. See lots of good things come out of being in DM -- a good career for you & a power house like Shawn Johnson! |
How wonderful. We can use a hero. |
