I wish I could clean

like a NORMAL person!

I just finished cleaning/dusting the desk. It is a large L shaped desk complete with a hutch/bookshelves.

For me, it isn't as simple as just dusting it. Oh no. I have to take everything off of it (including the computer), and SCRUB it until it "feels clean". I went through a whole can of furniture polish. I have to spray and then rub HARD to get all the dirt/grime/dust/germs off. THEN I have to wipe down all the books, then they all have to be put back on the shelves in a certain order. Then the few little knick knacks have to be polished and put back in just the right place. It wears me out. :dogzzz:

Betty'sMom 09-07-2007 11:40 AM

How often do you do this? If it's twice a year...no biggie. Every week...a bit much! LOL! Especially the whole can of cleaner!

Graleyne 09-07-2007 11:54 AM

The desk gets cleaned like that once a week. It takes about 3 hours.

It isn't just the desk I am like this with. Its everything.

I am trying to use Flylady because she uses the timer and sets it for 15 minutes at time. When it goes off, you move to something else. Not me. Oh no. I just set it for another 15 minutes and keep going. I can't stand the thought of leaving something uncompleted. That would drive me completely nuts!

celstu1 09-07-2007 11:59 AM

Are you crazy??? HAHAHA Who WANTS to clean like that? You gotta find something else to do so that you are not home to SEE the mess! LOL Seriously I was like that when I lived with my ex... obsessive cleaner, then realized that I was not in control of my life (he was) and keeping my house clean enough to perform surgery in was a way to keep some control of things around me.

I know Im being a little psychoanalytic here... but is there something you feel 'out of control' about ???

Yorkiekids 09-07-2007 12:05 PM

You're making me tired just reading this. I use flylady too, but I don't reset the clock for anything. I just wish I had a huge vacuum that would suck everything up at once.

Graleyne 09-07-2007 12:07 PM

Um....well....yeah, kind of. I guess. I mean, I am a control freak. I always have been.

I just want everything in its place, where it belongs, and I don't want anyone else touching it and "contaminating" it.

I drive DH crazy. I follow him around picking up and cleaning after him. If he gets up, even just to go to bathroom, he comes back to find the pillows fluffed, and things straightened. If he puts something away, I go behind him and reposition it so that its just perfect. Even if its only 1/16 of an inch off. I do it to the kids too, and recently I caught myself doing it to my grandmother, in HER house!

Ocd

This isn't said to be mean, just imo..has anyone ever mentioned obsessive compulsive disorder? I know there are medications to control it...I really don't think a desk can get quite that dirty that fast:p

Yes, its been brought up to me several times. I've looked it up and I don't think I am OCD. I think I am just REALLY anal.

LOL I have a DH, 3 skin kids, 4 furkids, and 9 feathery kids, yes it really can get that dirty that fast!

Grannyb 09-07-2007 12:17 PM

You can come to my house if you run out of something to clean!

Buddy-licious 09-07-2007 12:24 PM

oops...I was laughing so hard that I posted before I was finished.
My Mom use to clean like a cazy woman everyday....she would spend hours cleaning. However, she is better than she was ...she now takes meds for OCD. She says it has changed her life. She is so much happier since she has stopped obessing over cleaning all the time.
I have OCD slightly....I just really try to control it.

jp4m2 09-07-2007 01:07 PM

I used to clean like that...the q-tips would come out... the tooth brush... pipe cleaners and a arsenal of cleaning supplies.......

I would even walk around the house when it was dark with a flashlight and shine it on stuff looking for smudges and grime, especially the ceilings, the cob webs where shocking.....

I don't do that any more...I just did some fall cleaning last week and took 5 boxes of junk and knick knacks out to the attic...I'm simplifying, a lot less to dust and clean...it sure feels so much better with all that clutter gone....

I do that too!

I did go through and clear out a lot of stuff - I went through a feng shui thing, then got scared about losing my chi down the drains and decided not to go that route. (I swear someone posted about nearly flooding their room because they had the stoppers in the sink to prevent the chi from escaping, then I started panicking thinking about losing all of my chi because I know DH and the kids wouldn't put the stoppers back. ) I am so weird sometimes lol

Txgurl06 09-07-2007 01:24 PM

i think i have a light case of OCD but not cleaning like i have to go back into the bathroom like 10 times because even tho i know i unplugged my stuff i have to make sure. Also the same with locking the door, making sure nothing in on the floor for skoshi and kiele to choke on,

i do these things numerous times in the morning. sometimes i will drive halfway to work and will drive back to make sure i locked the door even tho im pretty sure i did. I get real annoyed with myself and think you know you locked it or unplugged it so why go back in? but its like a reassurance i have to keep going.

When i was little i used to walk the same spots over again or do stuff over again or just like i did it before or my day wouldnt go right.

im not sure if that OCD or just me being crazy but i know its annoying

LuvtheCooper 09-07-2007 01:30 PM

I USED to be really anal about things being "just right". I used to have to have things like towels, washcloths, clothes folded with everything even and just perfect. I hand washed dishes because I got them "cleaner". Then, when I had my kids they would want to help and I would find myself going behind them redoing things they had done. One day I realized I was teaching them they weren't doing it "good enough" by redoing what they were doing. That stopped me right then and there. Who cares if they were folded with each corner matching exactly...they had helped and felt good about it and I wasn't going to make them feel bad and not good enough. That little "wake up" was enough for me to see perfection wasn't all it's cracked up to be.

I will admit to being guilty of that too! I AM obsessed with the doors being locked. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night to check and make sure. Then, since I'm up, I have to make sure none of the faucets are dripping, the books are in order, and the stove is turned off.

Then I can sometimes go back to sleep. Other times I'm up for good.

You very well could have OCD.. (of course im no doctor). I TOO do many things like this.. (straightening things out, cleaning till its done(takes a while), etc.) (i do this and other things as well) i know i have ocd, although i have not been to the doctor to be treated/diagnosed with this. You wouldnt know it (unless you lived with me or i told you-and it seems to be worse when i am stressed) anyways.. there are different variations of this and you dont necessarily HAVE to 'open and close a door a certain amount of times'(for example), to have ocd. But obsessive cleaning, straightening things out to a 'certain way'/direction, being very "anal"/a "perfectionist" about things.. can be factors as well. ;) (you should think about other things that you do or that bother you, and look up OCD online, you may find that you have more symptoms related to this?) good luck!! but look at it this way(at least your house is clean-haha):p

Shadow 09-07-2007 06:23 PM

I use to be like this also. Mop everyday, dust clean toilets ,vaccuum all these things got done every day,now I'm a little older and just plum wore out!

LoveMyJake 09-07-2007 06:38 PM

I've always been the same way, but as I've gotten older, I've gotten better. I'm still a clean freak, but I don't push myself to get everything completely spotless all the time like I used to. I have way much more fun playing with Jake than cleaning lol

That's exactly how I feel! Plus, my kids are now grown and gone so I have less to do. Thinking back, I can't believe I would push myself so hard to get everything done EVERY day. I finally got to the point where my health was suffering, so I had to make a choice whether I wanted to get more rest and feel better or keep cleaning myself into a grave. I chose to rest more.:)

Amber_lv 09-07-2007 06:56 PM

I do have OCD and it is no picnic i hate it!!:( I am a door checker i have insomnia and i will lock the door and try to go to bed then i will forget if i locked the door and get out of bed and check and i can't just look i have to go to the door and touch it then i go back to bed and it starts all over again i do this at least 20 times a night. I also automatically lock the door when i come in or when company comes over the second i shut the door i lock it and i don't even relize i do it. People will go to leave and be locked in lol. I hate to clean for some reason but when i do clean it is horrible it takes me hours to do what a normal person would do in minutes i have to orginize everything. I won't eat food if someone else has touched it and i will not drink from anyone's or allow anyone to drink from my glass or can. I am weird about leftovers in the fridge i will not eat them past the day after i cook them. I will not eat from a bag of chips once it has been opened and eaten by anyone else lol. and i hate silverware i eat with plastic utencils lol. See we are all weird in our own ways. Geeze i really let it all out there lol sorry don't think i'm weird lol.

Luckyone 09-07-2007 07:20 PM

I'm OCD too. My main disorder of it is CSP, which is compulsive skin picking. I pick at anything I perceive as an imperfection. Be it on my face, arms, nails etc. I'm on meds for it and it's getting better.

I also get on the cleaning kicks and I don't stop until everything is perfect, much beyond what the normal person would do.

And I have a thing about processes. I do things in a certain way and get very aggitated when I have to deviate from it. From how I work to how I drive somewhere. All my windows on my computer have to be in a certain order. If one messes up and closes, I close everything down and bring it all back up in order. My meds aren't helping that  I think it's more of an impulse thing for me.

I have OCD, and it sounds like you have it to me! :p Seriously, the meds do wonders for you! I know it may sound really odd, but, I also felt like I didn't have it. Then after seeing the Dr for some other things, they discovered the underlying culprit! OCD! The meds have seriously turned me around and I feel like a different person! I am much happier, and not so worried/anal/obsessed/anxious as I once was. I swear, try talking to a Dr about it. Self diagnosis isn't usually accurate. hehe. Hope that helps, I have been there and never want to go back!

Also, I am notorious for checking the locks on the doors, and the alarm clocks. It takes me forever to get to bed or leave the house!!!
I am constantly late for work, I have to go back and check the lock 20 times. That seems to be my magic number. I have to have things done MY way or I don't want anyone doing it. Especially at work. I am sooo picky! They think I am a nut job, but, they know it gets done right! Plus, my bosses know about my problem and work with me on it.

adorame 09-11-2007 04:13 AM

I have OCD too and it is/was no fun at all!

Mine started up after having my second son, Kennedy, born with a Primary Immune Defect. To make a long story short lets just say he was very sick all the time and had to spend weeks and weeks every month in the hospital because he woulkd get "Super Infections" They used reverse Isolation on him, saying that it was people coming into the room and him getting infection upon infection. Well once they found out what was wrong and how to treat him he did not require the hospital stays His IVIG was helping him greatly but I was still freaked out after almost loosing him 2 times to blood infections  So I developed OCD about cleaning things ( sometimes an object would have to be Boiled in cleaning solution, sprayed with a bleach solution and wiped with Lysol before I would let my son even think of touching it) I had raw hands from bleach, and antibacterial soapand other cleaning solutions BUT my kids were never sick and their Peds would ask how I did it. My fears of Germs got real bad when the boy's started school, I had his Immunologist talk with the school nurse and they had a demonstration for his class on how to wash hands and also his classroom got sanitised every night. I even volunteered to come in every other day and wash the educational toy's they had in the class. I had became friends with his Ped Immunologist and it was him who realised that I needed to talk to someone about OCD. I did not think I had a problem at all I just knew I was trying to keep GERMS away from my kids!
