Anyone here an Art Education major/degree? I'm debating changing my major from Elementary Education to Art Education. I was curious if anyone here is an Art Ed. major or has an Art Ed. degree? |
hmm.. not sure if i'm any help.. but i have a degree in Fine Art and i'm now in teachers college where my main teachable is highschool art. i have a feeling there is a big difference between the way things are done in Canada compared to the US.. but if i can help at all.. just ask :) |
get a degree in elem education with a specialty license in art education. There are less jobs for an art specialist than for a general elementary educ teacher. Once you are in a school, and an art position opens up, you already have your foot in the door. just a suggestion ... based on experience ... |
I don't have any specific questions so to speak.. just curious if anyone had any experience with art ed. It's such a huge decision!! I can't decide if I should switch to art education or stick with elementary education and minor in art. What do you guys think? |
elementary education probably opens up more doors like Monday suggested. Good luck with your decisions!! |
my hubby is a professional artist and 5 years ago lost his "full time" job as a designer.. he went to college, just got an Art Ed major in May, started his "real" job in August and is absolutely in HEAVEN! If you are into art, I think it is a spectacular path.. from experience, you do have to push push to get into an art program at any school but art is moving up and is a more important lesson than it was before. he is now the only art teacher in a small community and travels to 3 schools teaching 1st to 5th grade and I have never seen him happier.. if you are lucky and the art education advisor in your area helps, it shouldnt be that hard to get in, just be patient... |

I have two degrees-one in Interior Architecture and one in Advertising (creative track)...since my Interiors degree is fine arts based, I actually took an elementary art ed class in college, since it counted as art credits, and I really like kids. (I was a full time nanny at the time, so it was easy to apply, too!) I would really like to go back to school after I've worked a few more years in my current career, and get my Ed degree, so that I can teach Elementary Art-that's my next dream job! |
