Tree damaged by wasp spray!! Any advice? Desperate here!! My husband (of course not reading the instructions and warnings on a can of wasp spray) sprayed our 2 year old magnolia tree to kill a HUGE wasp nest that was on the trunk. I found out about this after the fact. Wasn't too concerned at first. Then my SIL told me how she managed to kill some of her boxwood shrubs by spraying wasp spray on them. I thought maybe ours would be okay because she was using some super-duty strong stuff and our spray was some cheapy brand. This morning I happened to look at the magnolia tree and half of the leaves (where he sprayed) are DEAD!! I've tried googling for info and can't find anything. Please..... any advise from anyone before I call a plant expert? |
That's too bad, I only know to try and wash it off with LOTS of water..... |
Keep washing down the leaves, and cut off the dead leaves. You may want to go to your local nursery, and get some food for magnolia trees. Most of all don't let your hubby get near bug spray. |
Man, it's been several weeks since he sprayed it. You think washing it down now is going to do any good?? I wish I had thought of that sooner. I do plan on calling a nursery but someone here at work told me to NOT cut the dead leaves off. It's going to be Fall soon so it will go dormant. They said to just "wait and see". They said that even feeding it right now won't do much good because of the dormant issue. I was hoping for someone to tell me they did the exact same thing and had a wonderful outcome. Maybe someone will still come forward. |
I always feed in the spring and right before the fall, and always cut off dead leaves, because they rob energy from the good ones. It works for me. I'm the dead plant reviver around here. LOL |

3 Attachment(s) Okay, here's some pictures. The first one is of the side that has the damage. The other two are of the other side that's not so damaged. Those last two are a little difficult to see because the sun is on the other side, making the "good" side a little dark. Hope this helps. Oh, and excuse the lack of landscaping around that tree. Haven't gotten to beautify that bed yet. ;) |
We had a weeping cherry tree and the nursery told us to remove the dead leaves and to retill the dirt around the base...by hand...removing some old dirt and the chips and replacing with fresh mulch and chips. But another tree (I can't remember which), said not to remove the leaves. I would just call a local nursery and see what they say...you may have to call around to several before you get an answer. Good luck! We always use spray for flowering trees, etc....that you can get at Wal-Mart (can't remember the name)...but it is for using on fruiting and flowering trees and kills all sorts of bugs....we now haven't had a problem...you might check into getting some of that. |
Thanks! I'll be calling a nursery today...... wanted to see what kind of responses I got here first. It really just makes me sick that this happened and yes, hubby got an earful for not reading the instructions on the can. He does say though that he used the same spray on two other bushes (I think they were crepe myrtles) and nothing has happened to them. I hate wasps! They caused this whole mess. |
