Got the job offer
 

With the post office! Needless to say, I was quite shocked to get a call back.

The position only guarantees 1 day a week (and everyone down here starts off here). As people quit/retire, etc, you can then move up. Only thing is, I won't know which day of the week I'll be working and that can pose a big conflict with my current job.

I've thought about taking the post office job and then get a part time somewhere because there is room for advancement in the post office...where there is virtually none working for the school district.

If you were offered this job, would you take it?

Way to go! I knew you could do it! I hope it turns out to be the day of the week that is best for you! You are right about advancement working for the post office...I say give it your all! I'm so proud of you!

I would take it and get and get a part time job to suppliment. I bet you get on full time later

Congratulations on the job offer!!!...they apparently liked your interview, I would imagine there where a lot of applicants, so you must have stood out...

This is a big decision for you to make and I would imagine there are some risks that go along with it, painless change only happens in fairy tales ;) ....Can you take a 6 month leave of absence from the school job instead of just flat out quitting??...if you have pretty much maxed out in pay and advancements at the school job that would be a big minus there.... what your doing and making today would be the same in 5 or ten years from now ....would you be giving up a pension or any retirement benefits at the school?....Is the post office job a permanent job with definite advancement opportunities, do they have great benefits and a retirement package?....

Fear of the unknown is how some great things start....sometimes growing requires us to getting out of our comfort zone....Good luck with your final decision....:)

If you could afford to take it I'd go for it, and just get another part time job.

There is alot to think about but only you and your hubby can decide that one.
My only worry would be 'no benefits' for so long but your hubby may have great benefits.... health benefits are a must if one of you got sick. I think you could move ahead quicker than the most if you can handle stress well and that would be a real reason to take it. If you do, I remember you said you would be filling in one week and two week spans of time as needed so make sure they don't just give you money for gas but alot for upkeep and depreciation (they usually are pretty good about that, I think)
I wouldn't ask "will I get??" but how much will I get for expenses related to the use of my own car.

Just thought of something else. I know they would hate to lose you at the school system you work for there in Texas. You might ask if you could 'job share' your job with another person who would be willing to pick up what you couldn't do.

What is you current position at the school? Most districts would be willing to work with you. We have several part time employees and some with flexible schedules to accommodate other jobs.

I wish that my current job was more flexible but we're understaffed and over worked as it is. I know that when I was out for my hysterectomy last year, the ones that did my job while I was gone still had to do their job and let's just say, I was WAY behind for a while trying to catch up/fix what they did.

The job with the post office is temp. No benefits at this time. I drive my own vehicle but with gas/mileage reimbursements. Who knows...it could take a couple of months to get on full time or a couple of years. It's all such a huge gamble.

Thats what Im saying.... Congrats!!!

TAKE the government job!!! My husband gets terrific retirement benefits...and listen to this..I was at SS last week to apply for my pension (I am so happy about turning 62) and this guy who processed my claim was legally blind. He had to use a magnifying screen and he also had an aide to read things to him...the government fires NO ONE!!!

I'd take the job too - and then get a flexible parttime job. There is nothing like government benefits. There is room for advancement and the pay is good.

As I mentioned before, working at the post office "saved" my mom. She worked as an assistant postal clerk for 25 years (yes, it took that long for the postmaster job - it was a VERY small town) to come open. But she worked that one day per week for all those years, and then got the postmaster job when she was 55 and retired with full retirement at age 62. She's now 85 and if not for that postal job, she would be living on basically social security ONLY, as her other job for those 25 years, had NO retirement.

Also, my hubby worked at a government job for many years, and he became completely disabled due to medical illness (not a job injury) and was able to get his medical retirement from the government - which has saved our butts in terms of finances since he is unable to be well enough to work.

I KNOW it won't take 25 years for you to get on fulltime :) but my point is that you never know what will happen in the future and when you might need all the retirement benefits you can get!!!

Of course, the decision is yours - but I would lean heavily toward the government job.
