For those Nurses out there. I have a question I am begining my nursing classes and my question to you is, were any of you disgusted by the things you saw? I only ask because I really really enjoy helping people, I have a weakness for older people and children.. I see them hurt and all I want to do is make them better.. but at the same time I have a weak stomach , well now I do... everyone I know that works in the health field tells me that I will get used to it. I just wanted to get other opinions on this.. thanks!:) |
I am not a nurse, but my whole family is in the medical field. But they have all gotten use to it, so have I. I pratcially grew up in a hospital and I have seen some pretty bad stuff, for just sitting around. I think you will get use to it, and fast. Congrats on starting nursing school. |
thanks! |
I used to work in a Elderly Care Home and even when it came to changing diapers I was fine and I have a weak stomach. |
You'll get used to it. There's nothing wrong with having a bit of a weak stomach; you just have to not think about it in certain terms while you're in the middle of it. For example, if you don't like blood, you're going to have to be around it at some point.....so you turn off the part of your brain that personalizes it and you "detach" and just do what you need to do to be therapeutic; focus on the TASK,not the grossness of whatever it is. There is always something that will get to you; that's NORMAL and not very many people can tolerate EVERYTHING. I had a thing with seeing metal sticking out of people's skin...I have no idea why it bothers me so much, but it always has. Giving injections never bothered me a bit, but to see a big metal needle sticking out of someone's back for a lumbar puncture or a cannula sticking out of someone's abdomen to drain fluid just affected me. You just learn what the things are that you really CAN'T deal with and either get thru it or have someone help you out. The usual stuff, like smells, excretions, secretions etc....I don't want to gross anyone out, but you know what I mean....that stuff you'll get used to. It won't be the most fun stuff you've ever done in your life, but you'll get over it. Also, once you've been doing it awhile, you'll find the type of nursing that suits you most; Trauma freaks me out, but ICU, where everything is relatively controlled (in a warped kind of way) was my forte. Pediatrics wasnt' my cup of tea, but I loved working with infant heart surgeries. You'll learn along the way! And the most important thing to keep in mind is that whatever you're doing, no matter how small of a thing it seems, is something that's really HELPING a patient; it's something that they can't do for themselves, so you're making their life better in some way. It's all part of the growing and learning process. You'll do just fine:D . Good luck on your wonderful journey! |
thanks! i worried sometimes that I might be making a big mistake... I didnt grow up thinking I want to be a nurse, but as I aged ... I learned to appreciate it more and knowing that the little bit that I do help actually makes someone feel better or helps them.. means the world.. its a great sense of accomplishment to me... |

I'm not a nurse, but volunteer in the hospital. The only thing that ever gave me an upset stomach when this girl had her entire body burnt. |
For some reason, nothing much bothered me - even as a student. I think the only thing that really "turned my stomach" was rotting bedsores - the kind where the flesh was actually dying, and then only because of the smell. Nursing is tough and it can have its rewards, but if there's a chance you don't like it now....you may hate it later. BUT, there are so many other areas nurses can get into, so keep at it! :) |
Nurse here, for 34 years. Nothing much bothers me - but trauma in the ER does! When I worked in the hospital, I worked in ICU so I took care of trauma all the time. But I could not work in ER, because I couldn't stand seeing people with traumatic injuries dressed in everyday clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. come into the ER with trauma. By the time they got to me in ICU, they were either naked with a sheet over them or had on a hospital gown. The trauma didn't bother me a bit then. Wierd, I know. But it has to do with personalization - the more personal (e.g., clothes) the more it bothered me. The person who talked about the bad working conditions in hospitals is correct - BUT there ARE great hospitals to work in - particularly magnet hospitals. If you have a choice of hospital employment, choose a magnet hospital. The great thing about nursing is that there are so many different things that you can do. You don't have to work in a position in which you are miserable - you simply change trajectories! I think she also called nursing a "job". I've worked in nursing for 34 years, and I have never had a nursing "job". Nursing is my career, my profession, it is my passion, it is my life, and my joy - but never a "job". The sights/smells/sounds will get better. Try to detach and do the "task" that is making you feel queasy. You will get through it! Like another poster said, eventually, you can do most anything and eat at the same time! LOL! Enjoy! |
thanks guys! |
Warning, this is graphic! I have been a nurse for 24 plus years. At first I was disgusted by things. You know, it is kind of like changing a baby's poopy diaper. When you first start doing it, it is really disgusting. Then, you never really enjoy it but you just accept it, do the job and move on to something else. There are some things that really did bother me enough to direct me to my speciality. I could never stand working in the ER. I prefer to have my patients put together, for the most part, when I take care of them. Somehow I could not stomach severed body parts coming into the ER on ice or in plastic bags. I also could not stand dealing with burns. Still can't. I hate taking care of kids, not because I don't like kids but because I just get too emotional when they are hurting and I can't stop their pain. It takes special people to deal with each specialty. You will find yours. |
I'm not a nurse, but I have volunteered over 100 hours in various areas of the hospital. The ER was most exciting for me, but another girl that was a student literally turned green and passed out when one guy came in to the ER. He was in extremely bad shape. You will get used to it, and you will find where you want to work. |
thanks guys... I agree and I hope I enjoy it as much as some of you do. |
