I don't know what to do with myself I keep changing career ideas. I'm going mad :( My dad said Interior designers don't make money after i told him i might want to do that. I do want to make a lot of money so i X'd that out. Then i was deciding bet. being an OB-GYN or Dermotologist. That's A LOT of school but i think i can do it. I'm leaning towards Dermotology, i've always liked learning about that. But sometimes im just so confused!! |
Yeah, I always wanted to do OBGYN, but thats a lot of schooling... more than I wanted to do. |
Have you gone through any college yet? If not you have time to decide while your getting your AA. Take your time this is a life time decision. |
I'm in Interior Design, and it's hard... you can make good money, but you have to have the right clientele. In order to get good clients, or a job with a good furniture dealer, architect, or design firm, you have to have a BA or a BFA in Interior Architecture. I know there are many people that have businesses that call themselves Interior Designers, but they are not academically educated in the field, but do usually have lots of experience in the arena. Right now, there is legislation that has passes or is in process of being passed in many states that will "Weed out" the non-degreed people, and they by law cannot call themselves Interior Designers. Even if you have a degree, you have to keep up with the continuing education and take tests to stay current and marketable. If it's something you're interested in, by all means, go for it! But, keep in mind that unless you have a 4 year degree in the field, it may be very difficult to find a good position that pays well, and that you're happy working in. Right now, I work with only commercial interior environments, and it's challenging and interesting. There are rewards that come with it, but before you enter into a field like this one, I just wanted you to be aware of the reality of the busines and the requirements that are necessary to make good money in this type of career. |

college and life! Quote:
Even dentists do the ObGyn thing. Going between interior decorating or being a doctor is a BIG stretch ... but if you do decide on becoming a doctor, you will have the nicest looking office eventually. **smile** Or if you decide to become an interior decorator, you can always help someone if they cut their finger! I was a calculus teacher for 10 years in the beginning of my career and then decided I preferred the younger children. Now I love being with and teaching 5th graders. Life is a work in progress. What did you get your Bachelor's degree in??? What was your major? Where did you go to college? |

You may be able to get a job decorating rich people's homes-and if that's your cup of tea, go for it! And if you decide that you really do want to be a designer, definitely do it! But please keep in mind that career is decorating-if you want to be a true interior designer, there is much more to it than paint, window treatments and picking upholstery fabrics. I didn't know any of this when I first went into it either-there is SO much more. Designers have to know which walls they can knock down without causing structural damage to a building, how and where you can and cannot pull electrical, plumbing, cabling, h-vac systems. etc., and the business side of it-how to manage the entire project to make everything go smoothly. Also, something I forgot to mention is that if you do indeed go to school for this, there is a TREMENDOUS amount of art classes you need to take-drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, illustration, on top of a LOT of art history, and the normal design classes like textiles, lighting, etc. I was ok with this, but I had some classmates that had no idea about the heavy art emphasis, and dropped out after a year. I know every school is different, but most will follow along those same lines. I'll stop babbling now (can you tell I'm passionate about my career? ;) )-just know that if you have any questions, I'm happy to help. I ultimately want you to know what you're getting yourself into if you choose to go this direction. I wish someone would have told me! :) |
I was in the same situation you are in. I couldn't make up my mind. Everytime I would talk to my parents about what I wanted to do in college there was always something wrong with it. I wanted to do physical therapy, they didn't like the school, I wanted to be a chiropractor, my dad said they are a rip off, any college I talked about applying to my parents hated. They wanted me to go to a local all girls college and I just didn't want to go there. So I finished high school, got married that summer, had a baby a year later, and now I'm taking classes online for pet grooming. Not exactly what I pictured myself. I wanted so much more! Oh well...it's much to late now. |
Talk to actual ob/gyn's and I bet that 9 out of 10 will recommend dermatology. |

Don't think about the money or how long you have to be in school. Just find something that you love! You can get a job making tons of money, but if you hate the job, you won't be happy. I went to school for 8 years and did a 2 year internship. It took a long time to get my license to practice but it was worth it because I'm doing what I love. The years in school actually flew by and were so much fun. In the end, an extra 4 or 5 years of college is nothing when you consider that this is the rest of your life you are talking about. Find your passion and go with it! |

High risk speciality ... soon there will be no Obstetricians if this keeps up. :-( Dermatology sounds like it might be in demand these days b/c of the "anti-aging" possibilities .... follow your heart!!! |
