Anyone ever try to Patent a product? I have an idea that I'd like to patent. I was told to go to a patent lawyer to write the patent and file it and such, but it could run anywhere from $6000-$10,000 dollars. :( Then yesterday my sister's boyfriend said that I don't need a lawyer and I can do it myself. Anyone have any advice on this? All comments appreciated. :D Thanks! |

There's a user on youtube.com named renetto that in one of his more recent videos talks about how he got a patent and did it himself :) HTH! |

I recall something from a long time ago, that you can't patent an idea, you have to actually have a prototype for it. On a lighter note, my husband always jokingly says, "an idea is only yours for 30 days." And it is true. Ever notice how you think of something and you say to yourself, "what this world really needs is a ________ " and then, out of the blue, you see someone stole the idea out of your head and sold it! LOL :D |
my dad holds 2 patents the first one he started doing without a lawyer he it found that it was easier to do with a lawyer both ended up costing between $10,000 and $12,000 by the time everything was said and done. It is expensive but worth it, if I remember right, once you do the patent search your idea is protected to an extent and throughout the process on the first idea he had he drug it out a little longer so that he could afford to pay because money was a little tighter at the time. this info is pretty general but maybe it will help. |
He just did a detailed drawing had an enginier friend make it up for him |
