Back to school - for everyone :) The kids start school soon - including my youngest! So guess what I did?! I enrolled in some classes myself. I am really excited. I've wanted to go back to school for a while now. I just couldn't figure out HOW with the hours DH works and having 3 kids, etc. Now that they are all in school, I figured I'd do something for myself! |
Good for you - you deserve something special for yourself!!!! Best of luck to you (but I'm sure you don't need it)!!! |
Ditto! What classes are you taking? Just general basics? What do you think you want to major in? |
Right now its just the general basics. I've always wanted to major in Women's Studies w/a minor in Religious History. But then I started trying to figure out what exactly I could DO with those degrees. So now I'm back to second guessing and not being sure. I figure I can take the basic stuff and get some of that out of the way while I try to figure out what else I want to do. |
Some of it is wanting to go back to school just for fun and having something to DO, but most of it is wanting to have a career of my own. I love being a housewife and stay at home mom, but I just want MORE. Does that make sense? |
That makes absolute sense. I understand completely! :) General studies is good for now. Just enjoy and consider all of your options for awhile. What happened in my case was that I found a course of study that fascinated me (education) and realized that was where I was supposed to be. I started off in one direction and ended up in a completely different one. Just enjoy yourself right now. I am so proud of you! :) |
Thank you so much! For the first time in a long time I'm actually proud of myself! Thinking further about it I could still do Women's Studies and go on to law school and practice civil rights law (another sudject that fascinates me). I can always study religious history as a hobby. |
There are also a lot of ways to combine religious studies with law. Especially civil rights law. I think law school would be a great idea! You go girl!! |
Me Too, Me Too. Doesn't it feel so great. I'm just so excited. |
Congrats on going back to school. My Daughter just went back and I am going to go back to work. My Husband has a courier company and he has a new route starting in October and I am going to do it. The pay is great and My Husband said I could do whatever I wanted with the money. I am going to get new wood floors and new furniture. |
Congrats! Yeah! That takes guts. I took 3 classes before I had kids and then my dream just kind of faded away into motherhood. I still look into going occasionally but just can't figure out how it would work. I'm in the same situation you were in, my husband works long hours & I can't afford to pay a babysitter & tuition, heck, right now I can't even afford the tuition part. I tell myself that someday when the kids are older I'll do it. I wouldn't know what I wanted to major in either. I think it's pretty funny that I still don't know what I want to be when I "grow up". Keep us posted. Maybe I'll get so inspired by you that I'll actually enroll next year when my youngest is in 1st grade. |
You're going back to school too? That is AWESOME! Yes, it does feel great! Just being enrolled has done wonders for my self-esteem. I'm excited too! |

There are tons of grants that you can get. There are also schools that offer grants to women over 25 who are going back to get their degrees, etc. You really have TONS of options to pay for it. It may take a little research to see what is available to you in your state, etc. Some grants are national, some are state only. |
Congratulations on your decision to go back to school. Years ago there many options for people who did not want to go to college or vocational school. Now these jobs are being very scarce. You may not even be worried about the job forecasts--sorry! I am excited for you! BTW--it is definitely BACK to SCHOOL here in the south...some of my nieces started back yesterday (Friday). All the rest of the nieces and nephews go back on Tuesday. I have professional development meetings Monday-Thursday and my students start Friday. |

I'm a 49 year old college sophomore:eek: You'll love it!! Because I work, I do take on-line classes for some things. Others, you just have to be there. It all depends on your learning/study style. So, school starts for me again on 8/27. This semester, it's government, accounting II and art appreciation. It's never too late. Don't overload yourself and enjoy. It's amazing how many people in my classes are my age, so I don't feel out of place at all. First, go on line and fill out the FAFSA (go directly to their website, don't pay anyone to do it for you) and check with the financial aid department at your school. I got a $400.00 grant this semester from some weird place, along with my Pell Grant. There's all kinds of money out there to be had, you just have to look and ask a lot of questions. You'll feel so good about yourself and, if you have kids, it will set a great example for them. GOOD LUCK:p |
great idea!!! we are never too old to learn ... I advise many oif my patients to do just that! what will you study???? |

Go ahead and start looking now. I did a combination of my own research and talking to the financial aid department. They were a huge help! |
That is soooooo great for you!!!! and I also know how wonderful it feels. I too have just reg. for classes. My major is nursing. I also understand that it can be hard to find the time and money for this. But in my case, I have to work, my husband works hard but with three kids we need both incomes. So after many years of saying "I really want to be a nurse" and doing nothing about it, working a job that paid well that I hated, I decided it was time. I quit the job and have signed up! Now don't get me wrong we still need the money, but my husband said he think we can make it if I find a part time job for now. We will have to give somethings up, But it will be sooooooo worth it in the long run. This is the web site I used to file my financial aid. www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov ( it has paid for all my classes- I'm taking four, but I will have a loan to help pay for books and stuff. Good Luck to all of us who are attending now!!!!! and to those of you who are thinking of doing it, it might be hard, but it will be so worth it in the long run. Amy:) |

I am 37 and just started some on line classes at our community college. I was in law enforcement. After 13 yrs I have decided it is not for me anymore. I am looking into a degree in social services. It is hard w/ husband and kids, and all we do as wives, but it is satisfying. Good for you. You should feel proud!:bravo: |
Good for you:)!!! I bet you are excited, did you take advantage of the tax free weekend? |
I sure did! For both myself and the kidlets! |
Congrats. I went back to school at an "older" age and loved it. I got grants and other help that pd for everything. You will do good at what ever you decided to do. |
