I have Poison Ivy- anyone have a good remedy

I have Poison Ivy for the first time in my 36 yrs. I was a big tom boy as a child and spent most of my time in the woods. I thought I was immune to it because of never having got it back then. WRONG! I clean out my back fence line and 2 days later! BAM! It's on the inside of both forearms. I found out I can't give it to my babies, that made me feel better. It's driving me CRAZY!! I'm getting a new blister about every 8 hours. Trying not to pop the blisters, constantly putting on the no-itch stuff. I feel so sorry for people who get this very easily and get it bad. I only have about 10 blisters total but it's so itchy. I'm looking for some good home remedies to help dry it up!

Calamine lotion or Caladryl helps. Have you taken any Benadryl? It might help with the itching. You might also call your doctor and see if he can phone in a prescription or something. Have you taken an oatmeal bath?

Graleyne 07-29-2007 06:24 AM

My daughter gets poison ivy if she so much as THINKS about it. Does your local pharmacy carry Ivy-Dry? You can find it at wal-mart as well. Wonderful stuff!

Other than that I'd suggest a dr visit.

BLowry 07-29-2007 06:29 AM

I was going to suggest what the above posters suggested...Also. Benadryl works pretty good...The oral med will work from the inside to help stop the itching...only thing is it's going to make you sleepy. If it gets really bad, I would see your doctor. He can give you a shot that will help.

I've got some generic calamine (although it's clear and not pink). I'll try some benedryl. It may knock me out and I'm going to a cook out today for the Brickyard 400 that's here in town. I can't spread it just by being around people can I? I feel so bad for your daughter getting it so easily. I'm off to the drug store for REAL calamine lotion, benedryl, and maybe some Ivy Stop. Thanks ladies, keep the idea's coming.

yes! If it is leaky it can be spread very easliy....especially if someone is allergic to it.

paulapoo 07-29-2007 07:17 AM

Looks like I'm going to have a boring, itchy Brickyard 400 day. It's always a big day here cause we're so close to Indy. Guess I'll just lay in the pool and relax here with my boys:) Maybe chlorine will help dry it out!!!

If over the counter things don't work for you call your doctor. I believe they have something for poision ivy.

JeanieK 07-29-2007 08:28 AM

I am the queen of Poison Ivy. once you have had it, you are much more sensitive to it.

No you cannot get poison Ivy from someone else.

http://pediatrics.about.com/od/poiso...poison_ivy.htm

Other than the benedryl and poison Ivy lotions. Ask your Dr for prednisone, and common regular old household amonia will help with the itching.

katern 07-29-2007 08:32 AM

I never reacted to poison ivy until 6 years ago. Now, if I go within 6 feet, I die!!. MD can give you steroids , its the fastest way to get rid of it. All the other remedied work, but are much slower. Also, swimming in a chlorinated pool dries it out fast.

YORKIEMOM2B2006 07-29-2007 08:53 AM

I had it all over my hands a few weeks ago, dr gave me a shot of benadryl and cleared it up. maybe over the counter benadryl would work

paulapoo 07-29-2007 12:03 PM

Thanks everyone! I work for a doctor so maybe I can talk him into something potent tomorrow. I must be a wuss, I don't have it that bad but man it's itchy. I can't imagine people who are really covered in it!

chachi 07-29-2007 12:07 PM

Zanfel drys out poison ivy quickly. I get it at CVS pharmacy. It is expensive like $40 a tube but worth it It helps with the itching also

mizzwanned 07-29-2007 12:58 PM

I've never had it but one time at camp my friend got it and was she crying! Long time ago ofcourse. Maybe Aloe Vera will heel it better

paulapoo 07-29-2007 01:13 PM

Okay, I don't know how this happened but I just found a blister in my belly button right beside my belly button ring. Geesh, When will they stop popping up. I'm not popping the blisters, I hope it stops spreading. I was laying out in the sun and thought, "this can't be good for it" so I've taken a cool shower and I'm inside watching the race. I hope I don't find any more blisters.

If you work for a doctor, he probably has z-packs...I think that's what they're called anyhow..prednisone which works great. And is what they give to people who are allergic to it. Maybe you can get a shot of some steroid though....I would think that's what the shot someone else mentioned getting probably was.

txshopper73 07-29-2007 03:05 PM

I was about 30 the first time I got into poison ivy. I suffered for about a week and said ENOUGH! I went to the doctor and got the shot and some creme. What a relief...they were gone in a matter of days.

I agree....... my hubby had it pretty bad and zanfel cleared it up - after using it, the itching stopped immediately.

4 out of my 5 children have had poison ivy all at the same time. Two are severely allergic to it and they go in for a steroid shot whenever they get it which helps clear it up fast. It can not be spread by oozing blisters. You only get it by being exposed to the oil, which can be on your clothes and even your pet. If it's not real severe, Benadryl and Calamine Lotion work for my kids along with Oatmeal baths.

Hopefully your doctor will give you a steroid shot so you can get it over with. I've seen blisters continue to appear for a week, without the steroid shot.

Good Luck and try not to scratch it or purposely bust the blisters. I know that's not easy to do!!

I had poison ivy and posin sumac (however you spell it) very badly a few weeks ago. Zanafel worked great and although it is expensive, it's the only think that really dried up my poison.
Goodluck!

Paula...So you've been in the weeds and now have poison ivy. I haven't had that since I was a kid, I guess I became immune to it...or I learned to stay out of the weeds. I still have nightmares, of my mom running after me to plaster me with calamine lotion...God I hated that stuff, and I spent every single summer covered with that pink paste.
Laying out in the sun...or taking a hot bath/shower IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! Try the Ivy Itch stuff (cheaper) but the Zanfel (expensive) is suppose to work great. Or just wait until tomorrow and ask the doctor you work for to cure you!!!
Benedryl at bedtime...will help you sleep and take away the itch.
Wish you well...NOW STAY OUT OF THE WEEDS!!!

Oh forever more!! This is why I need a husband, so I don't have to clear the back fence!!! Well, for the poison Ivy update, It is now in and around my left ear, both arms, my belly button and.....this just in... a new blister on my left lower leg. I'm tellin ya, my heart goes out to all who get this all the time and are widely covered with it. I'm hoping this is my first and LAST encounter with poison ivy/oak/sumac. I don't even know exactly what it is I have. I'm trying not keep myself from buying the 40.00 zanawhatever cream, but that may be what it comes down too. I shower twice a day, I don't understand why it keeps spreading!!! I may ask if I can have a solumedrol shot tomorrow. Geeesh! I'm such a wuss!!!!
P.S. I NEVER gotten this before despite spending lots of time in the woods and weeds. So I was unaware I needed to be cautious. LESSON LEARNED!!!

Yes, we do live and learn...you'll need to be able to identify the plant, so it can be avoided in the future. Sure hope you feel better quickly...I absolutely hated having poison ivy every single summer as a child...does a person eventually become immune to it??? I still do a lot of my own yard work...I have to tame the neighbors brush along our back fence too...hope I don't get it again...it's miserable!!!

paulapoo 08-01-2007 05:36 PM

Are you all sick of me whining about this yet??? Now it has formed a nice line down the left side of my face. Very attractive. My doc says he can give me oral steroids but thinks I shouldn't. None of the areas are large, it just continues to spread.:( He says I have to be re-exposing myself. I think maybe it's on my boys coats and when I love on them it gets back on me. I gave them baths. I will not bore you all anymore with my pustules/blisters. Thanks for the suggestions you gave.

rrosenberry 08-01-2007 05:40 PM

Oh I've had it all over my face before! I looked like the Elephant Girl!

cockerduchess 08-01-2007 07:19 PM

Zanfel works great! Myself, my son and my sister are all very allergic to poison ivy if we look @ it we get it Lol we have used this but it's pretty expensive if you know anybody who sells avon you can buy one of their planet spa scrubs the mediterranean olive oil scrub and conditioning hair mask and it works great if you can't find that try some o/c hydorcortisone cream and take some benedryll. Hope this helps you out.
