Looking For Advice & Personal Experiences Please I've been to see my Midwife today and I've been suffering with really bad back pain for the past two weeks which shoots down into my right leg. It turns out I have a trapped nerve and I'm going to be referred for treatment. I can choose between Accupuncture or Physio. If anyone has had either treatment can you please tell me what they do, how beneficial they were, etc... I can't decide which as I've never had Accupuncture and the only Physio I've had was on my wrist when I broke it... Thanks in advance... |
treatment I have had sciatica before (pain running down butt through leg to heel)..I can sympatize with you..it hurts!! The accupuncture I tried for it..did not work. Tried therapy, helped marginally. The only thing that worked for me was rest and time. When are you due? Debbie |

I'm due in January and she said that I'll probably suffer with back pains through out my pregnancy now rather than later on. :( |

I suffer a lot of back problems when I am preggers. I would suggest that you make sure to not cross your legs (only at the ankle). That puts a ton of pressure on your lower back. Try to not sit for extremly long periods of time. Do your best to get up and stretch and walk a bit. Also definitely get a body pillow for when you lay down to sleep. It definitely helps a lot. You can also try some prenatal yoga or pilates so you can do a bit of strengtening of your back. Another thing that works is getting down on all fours and kind of arching and releasing the arch to your back...it helps to stretch it out and relieve some of the pressure on your back. These things helped me get through three pregnancies. Good luck hon. |

Wow, thank you! So much advice! I've changed my sitting position now, I was sat crossed legged but not now! lol I'm going to go and kneel on all fours in a minute too and see how that feels... :D You've actually given me more advice than my midwife who just said she was going to refer me! lol |

A lot of times we sit down (I do this alot) and cross our legs at the knees and that is very very bad for someone to do even if you are not pregnant. It puts a load of pressure on your lower back. While these suggestions won't cure the sciatica it will help to ease the situation. Another good tip...sooner or later you wont' be able to sleep very comfortably. I usually purchase a ton of pillows and set myself up in an almost sitting position to sleep...it really helps. Another big big must is to drink water. You need the water to keep your muscles hydrated. That also eases a lot of tightness in them. That doggie stretch is very comy..it's also used in a lot of deliveries to take the pressure off of your back and ease labor pains. |
If you can get to a swimming pool get in. You won't believe how much better you'll feel. |

I actually was thinking about labour in that Doggie position, for some reason it seemed like good idea to me... |

You can swap positions through out the whole process until you find one that is most comfortable for you. I labored on my back with all three and I was fine with it. When the aches and pains take you will find what works best for you. |

I don't like the idea of an Epidural and then not being able to move about. |

I didn't get up and walk around. It all depends on how long you labor as well. I am not a fan of any sort of unnecessary drugs especially not something that can paralyze me. I never never took any even for my first delivery. I had a friend here at work whose sister recently had the epi and was left paralyzed for six weeks post delivery because of it. I also have friends that have had it that now complain of back problems and pains in the epi site so I know for sure that totally natural was for me. I am not trying to sell you on it or scare you away from an epi. The choice is definitely yours but personally for me I wanted to experience what was to come and be totally in control while in labor/delivery. Mind you my last two deliveries were breech babies and I did it all natural with no drugs. I have to say it was not bad at all. |

I've never been keen on an Epidural anyway, I was hoping to survive it on Gas and Air alone but if it comes down to it then I will ask for something else. |

Honey you can do it. Believe me we women are strong and can take some pain. |
