Female health question Ok, not sure how to ask this, but here goes. When you get a pap smear and they send it out what are they checking for or what tests do they do? Wouldn't you think the HPV test which checks for cervical cancer would be standard? |
The pap test checks for changes in the cells of your cervix. Those cells come in all varieties and the more abnormal the more tests they will perform after like colposcopy, biopsies, etc. HPV does show up in the results and is the leading cause of abnormal results. I REALLY encourage everyone to have it done yearly! It's so important to women's health! Here is a really good link to information~ http://www.4woman.gov/faq/pap.htm#pap01 |
Good Answer:thumbup: I had a hysterectomy in 1990 and they removed my cervix. I've had clear pap's every year......then there was the test last month that showed something irregular . I had a colposcopy & biopsy. Everything is ok, but I have to have a pap test every 6 mos until I have a clear one. |
I think the biggest thing some women don't realize is even if you've had a hysterectomy and don't have a cervix, you still need a pap because the abnormal cells can be on your vaginal walls. The new thin prep pap smears do test for HPV, and if it's positive they can do more extensive testing on the same specimen to determine what type and how severe it is. There is a box for the physician to mark to make sure the HPV is checked, make sure you specifically ask them just in case. |
