Stopping Payment On A Check I had new carpet layed two weeks ago this coming Monday. It is a complete mess . I have areas all over the place where the carpet isnt attached to the tak strips. In one closet they took the padding a strips out and cut the carpet and just placed it in the closet, many numerous things. I have called the carpet place many times and they said they woulsd call him and get him back out here.Well I still have not seen him.He did call afew days ago wanting to know what the problem was and said he would come yesterday if he had TIME. I left him a message this morning and he never called back .I payed him 535.00 by check and he still haven't cashed it. Has anyone ever done this, stop payment on a check for bad services? |
Do it - my husband was in that business for years and if you don't take action - lots of them ignore you and think you'll drop it. There's no reason for that at all. You can stop payment - it'll cost you money - and tell them when it's FIXED you'll write them a new check and deduct the fee you had to pay. That sucks. There's no reason to be sloppy and you should be loving your new carpet not upset. |
I'd do it. Your bank will charge you about $18 - $25, but seems worth it to me. Do it fast before they cash it too. |
I'm not trying to get of paying the guy,I just want my carpet fixed! My husband just called the carpeting store and ask for the manager and he is with a customer and is suppose to call back. We haven't even be able to put our bed together because of THIS MESS! |
I'm not saying you're trying to get out of it. Just don't pay them until they do it right. |
Yeah -- do it. These guys seem to try and get by with a lot. When we put carpeting in our basement, they supposedly measured to carpet the backs of the stairs -- but weren't going to do it when they got here. THEN ... there was this "puddling" of carpet in one corner. It literally looked like a camel laid down in the corner and they carpeted right over it! It took TWO WEEKS to get them out here to fix it. And the guy had the nerve to look directly at that corner and ask me, "So what's wrong with it?" I told him that either a camel died under the carpet or it needed to be pulled into place and cut! :D |
yes I would do it to and I sure hope you get it taken care of. |
You paid for a professional job and you should not have to pay until you are completely satisfied. Stop payment and call them and tell them why. Don't pay them until you are happy with it. My dh was a contractor and always held the final pymts until he the customer had had time to check everything and make sure there were no problems. Then he would check back with them and if they were happy, then he would deposit the final check. It's a good business practice. |
I would do it. It'll cost you around $20 (give or take, depending on your bank) and it sure beats the alternative of having to deal with this after he's cashed it. |
Hopefully they have not yet cashed your check. Don't hesitate stop payment now! It's amazing how no one takes pride in what they do anymore. It would cost $30.00 here to stop a check but it would be worth it. Like V said above deduct it from the final payment when they fix your carpet. Good luck, |
I had to put a stop payment on a check written a few years ago for being way way over charged for a part to repair my fridge. The part being replaced cost retail $12.00 and the company that repaired my fridge charged me over $150.00 for the part. I call and spoke with the owner and a very nice, polite way and wanted to know why such a markup for such an inexpensive part. He was a real a**hole and told me that this was the way he did business. I proceded to let him know that I was going to take him to the Better Business Bureau and contact the State Contractors License Board. His reply was "Lady do what you have to do"... Well I went ahead and put a stop payment on the check which was good for six months. To make a long story short....after 6 months the check was cashed (he put it for payment every month) I called the bank wanting to know why they went ahead and paid the check and was informed that in order to keep a check from being paid you would need to renew the stop payment every 6 months or close out your checking account. This was all news to me...and the lowlife got away with getting his money....Now I am much more educated on the process of stop payments on checks.... |
Yes, and the sooner you do it the better. |
This thread was started June 22nd, what finally happened? Did you stop payment? Did they fix it to your satifaction? If they haven't, hopefully you stopped payment on the check. Hope things worked out to your advantage. |
